How to Apply for Financial Aid at Colorado Mesa University

Please read and follow the instructions carefully.  If you have any questions or concerns contact Colorado Mesa University Office of Financial Aid at 970.248.1396.  The financial aid process usually takes 6 - 8 weeks from application to disbursement of funds.

Step 1: Create Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) and complete the FAFSA

I. Create an FSA ID.

  • The FSA ID is a secure way to confirm your identity when accessing your financial aid information.
  • The FSA ID must be used by students and parents to electronically sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Master Promissory Note(s)
  • Both the student and the parent will need an FSA ID (if the student is considered a dependent)
  • You will use this each year that you apply for federal aid and to complete Loan Agreements (Master Promissory Notes).

II. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • The FAFSA is the federal government's application to determine financial aid eligibility for most types of financial aid.
  • Applications can be filled out online.
  • Login using the Student FSA ID username and password.
  • Be sure to list Colorado Mesa University in order for us to receive your information. Our school code is 001358.

Step 2:  Complete Verification (if selected by the U.S. Department of Education)

  • Login to your MAVzone account by going to:  https://coloradomesa.edu/mavzone
  • Click "My Tasks"
  • Look for the Financial Aid dropdown
  • Requirements in the Financial Aid dropdown indicate missing material (If you don't have any tasks, move on to Step 3)
  • Click on the task item and follow the instructions to complete

Step 3:  Accept Terms and Conditions/Accept Aid

Review Your Financial Aid Offer

  • Click the "Award Overview" tab to see the awards being offered to you
  • Click "Accept Terms and Conditions" tab to read and accept
  • Click the "Accept Award" tab to accept full or partial offer
  • If no extra documentation is needed, you will receive an "Award Letter". 
    • First time students will receive an award letter in the mail in addition to being able to view their award online.
    • Returning students will be able to view their award offer online by clicking the link above.

Note:  The calculation for the award offer(s) is complete and correct, based on the information you provided.  Financial aid award offers may be subject to change due to changes in your financial, academic, enrollment status and/or changes in the availability of funds.

Step 4: Complete "Loan Agreement for a Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan (MPN)" and "Loan Counseling"

Step 5:  Complete Federal Direct PLUS (Parent) Application.

  • Parent borrower logs in using the parent FSA ID
  • A credit check will be completed within the application
  • Specify if you wish to defer payment
  • Specify to whom any refunds should be sent: parent or student
  • Specify loan amount: Enter specific number or select “maximum loan amount”“Maximum loan amount” is the total cost of attendance, minus any other aid received
  • Specify the award year: August to May

    • To Apply for PLUS Loan - Go to www.studentloans.gov. Click “Parent Borrowers”, then “Apply for PLUS Loan”, then “START”. Log-in with the borrowing parent’s FSA ID. Parent PLUS Loan Applications are available June 1 for the 2018-2019 Academic Year.
    • Complete Loan Agreement / Master Promissory Note – If you are a first time parent borrower at CMU, you will need to complete the electronic Loan Agreement / Master Promissory Note. Go to studentloans.gov and login with the borrowing parent’s FSA ID. Click “Parent Borrowers”, then “Complete Loan Agreement for PLUS Loan (MPN)”, then “START”.

Step 6:  Complete a "Loan Agreement for a PLUS (MPN)" (if needed)

Step 7:  Apply for Private (Alternative) Loans (if needed)

  • Available for students who are not eligible for federal loans or for those who need assistance beyond their federal financial eligibility.
  • Arrange for cosigner if needed
  • Go to https://elmselect.com/ for more information on Private Loans
  • Proceeds from private loans will not disburse until at least 6 days after a loan is approved
