Follow the steps below to apply for federal aid as a graduate student via the FAFSA.

Step 2

Complete Additional Loan Requirements

Once you have filled out the FAFSA, you may need to complete additional steps for your loans to disburse. 

You may have to do Loan Counseling, Master Promissory Notes, and/or a Graduate PLUS Application.

  3. Apply for Graduate PLUS Loan

    (Please note that the amount you put on your application replaces the amount accepted in your MAVzone. Loans will also automatically be originated.)

Step 3

Check if you were selected for verification

If you were NOT selected for verification proceed to Step 4

In some cases, a student’s FAFSA may be selected for verification by the US Department of Education. Go to MAVzone to check if you were selected for verification.

If you are selected for verification, your financial aid offer will not be packaged until the verification is completed.

  1. Login to MAVzone and go to “My Tasks”

    Look for the Financial Aid in your tasks. Click to see requirements outstanding for Financial Aid. If you were selected for verification, it will be listed here. Click on the task item and complete the required form for the verification process.

Step 4

Review and accept your financial aid offer

Now that your FAFSA is processed, you will receive an offer from the Financial Aid office. Please check the offer to make sure that your graduate program start semester is correct. 

If no other documentation is requested, first time students will receive an offer letter or email in addition to being able to view their offer online. Returning students will view their offer online.

NOTE: The calculation for the financial aid offer is complete and correct, based on the information you provided in your FAFSA. Financial aid offer may be subject to change due to changes in your financial, academic, enrollment status and/or changes in the availability of funds.

  1. View your offer

    Click the “Award Offer” tab to see the financial aid being offered to you.

  2. Accept your financial aid

    On the "Award Offer" tab scroll to your offer to accept a full or partial amounts.

  3. Accept Terms and Conditions

    You must agree to CMU’s terms and conditions to receive financial aid. After accepting an award you will be asked to accept terms and conditions.

  4. Set up your refund account

    All students are encouraged to sign up for direct deposit with the bank of your choice. By doing so, refunds will be electronically deposited directly to a checking or savings account of your choosing.
