CMU's engineering students are involved in more than just their engineering curriculum. They apply their knowledge and skills to team-based projects and competitions every year. Check out our current projects below!
Hosted by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), this unique bi-annual competition challenges students to forge a functional blade using traditional and modern metallurgical techniques. CMU engineering students dive into the art and science of bladesmithing - designing, heat-treating, and testing their blades while learning about materials properties, thermal processing, and craftsmanship.

As members of the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, CMU students participate in an annual robotics challenge focused on space-related engineering problems. Past projects have included autonomous rovers and remotely operated systems designed for extraterrestrial exploration. This opportunity allows students to collaborate with peers across the state, apply engineering theory to practical problems, and engage with NASA-funded initiatives.

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) at Colorado Mesa University empowers students to use their engineering skills to improve quality of life in underserved communities - both locally and abroad. As part of the national EWB-USA network, CMU students work on real-world projects such as designing water systems, sanitation infrastructure, and sustainable energy solutions. Along the way, they gain valuable experience in project planning, cross-cultural collaboration, and socially responsible engineering.

GoBabyGo! is a national, community-based outreach program that modifies ride-on toy cars for children with mobility challenges. CMU engineering students work in teams with students in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other majors to design and retrofit these vehicles using custom controls, supportive seating, and safety features to meet each child's unique needs. Through this annual hands-on project, students apply core engineering skills while making a meaningful impact in the local community.

Mesa Motorsports is CMU's student-led club that designs, builds, and races a formula-style race car for the international Formula SAE competition. Each year, students work through every phase of vehicle development - from concept and CAD modeling to fabrication, testing, and competition - gaining real-world experience in mechanical design, systems integration, teamwork, and project management.

In this nationwide competition, hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), student teams design, fabricate, and construct a scale-model steel bridge. CMU civil engineering students put their technical knowledge and teamwork to the test as they balance strength, weight, and speed of assembly under strict competition guidelines.
