Hi everyone, my name is Brett Marlowe and I’m a senior at CMU. I was born and raised in Dalton, Georgia and moved to Castle Rock, Colorado in the 6th grade. I graduated from Castle View Highschool in 2019. I’m a math major and philosophy minor, and I’m on track to graduate in spring 2024. I plan on going to graduate school for mathematics as well as finishing a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.
I have always enjoyed teaching and helping peers understand concepts, and I’ll need to be a TA when working on my graduate degree, so this job is great practice for me to develop my skills for the future. My goal is to give these students the time and patience in their math education that I did not get in my high school experience.
My name is Garrett Marken and I am a current TRIO Upward Bound tutor at Grand Junction High School. I am a current student at CMU and in the CU Boulder-CMU partnership program for Mechanical Engineering. I am a first-generation student from the valley and am excited to work and help first-generation students navigate through high school and going into college. I enjoy reading, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, and just getting out into nature to explore the world.
Hi everyone, my name is Liban Shongolo. I am originally from Commerce City, Colorado and graduated from Adams City High School, a school that has faced many challenges along the way. At CMU I am double majoring in criminal justice and political science with plans to attend law school after graduating. Family is everything to me! I come from a big family of nine siblings who all support one another’s success and value making the road a little easier for those who come after us.
I am passionate about working with young people and helping support first-generation students like myself in navigating the college journey. I am big on helping students develop their character and perseverance since we will all face challenges in life. In addition to supporting our next generation of students, I value helping my community grow and thrive through non-profit work. I am excited to get to work with you through Upward Bound!
Greetings! My name is Lucas Moore, and I am excited to be working with you all her at Upward Bound! I was born into a military family, but when my dad retired, we settled down in Colorado Springs where I graduated from Widefield High School. Here at CMU I am actively working on pursuing a degree in Biology, with emphasis in cellular, molecular, and developmental fields, with plans to attend grad school for genetic counseling after graduation. If there’s one thing you need to know about me, it’s that I am a huge geek when it comes to games of any kind, and I’d happily burn hours on end playing long strategy games or RPGs like D&D. With any game though, the friends make it all the better. A fun time and good company? What more could a man want!
Here at Upward Bound I’m passionate about building a sense of wonder for the world into all those I interact with and hope to stir a passion for science and inquiry in my students, as well as reduce the fear around math. Since I was always one of those kids who used to never leave the comfort zone, I also strive to create a sense of open-mindedness, adventure, and fearlessness concerning challenges. If there’s one thing to keep to heart, it’s that it’s okay to fail. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. Perseverance is key, and with enough effort, anything becomes possible.
I’m excited to work with all of you here at Upward Bound and to help you grow into the people you were always meant to be. Stay smiling and have a wonderful day!
Hello! My name is Gabby and I am currently a senior at CMU who will be graduating in the spring. I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and graduated in 2020 from Heritage High School. My major is Exercise Science, and I am hoping to work in Prosthesis and Orthotics in the future. During my free time, I like to play with my dog, cook, draw, and paddleboard!
Growing up, sports were a very big part of my life, especially swimming. I have taught swim lessons for the past 7 years and have found my love for teaching and helping others through this. I loved being able to see the change that the students were able to make in and out of the water. Having a comfortable place to learn and advance skills helped boost their confidence, happiness, and their feeling of support, which is what I loved to see the most. I am very excited to be able to continue to do what I love with Upward Bound!
