Special Processing due to COVID 19
Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grades
All grades will be posted by the instructor using the A, B, C, D, F grades. Students can choose to keep the original grade or switch to the S/U grade option using the form link below by May 31, 2020.
The S/U grade will have no effect, positive or negative, on the student's institutional GPA. The option for S/U applies to any full semester, late start, or second mod course.
Satisfactory Grade (S) - Passing
- Typically replaces a grade of C or better. The exceptions are graduate level courses, education (EDUC) courses, and KINA 497, for these courses, it replaces a B or better.
- Before choosing a S grade a student should consider if the course requires a posted grade of A/B for their desired degree or if an S/U grade is acceptable for any future degree paths.
Unsatisfactory Grade (U)
- Typically replaces a grade of D or F. The exceptions are graduate level courses, education (EDUC) courses, and KINA 497, for these courses, it replaces a C or below.
- Courses with a grade of U will not be usable for graduation requirements.
- If the original grade is passing, the student should review DegreeWorks between May 25-31 to see if the course is usable in the essential learning, major, electives, or other requirements. The student may want to consider keeping the D if it counts in the degree over retaking the course. If the course is a prerequisite for other courses in the major, the student is encouraged to reach out to their advisor.
- If you are requesting U grades for all your classes, you may need to document last date of attendance for Financial Aid. Students meeting this criteria should watch their CMU email in June for further details.
Be sure to read the full S/U policy and additional Q & A's before submitting the S/U request form.
Academic Standing and Financial Aid Update
A student's academic standing, financial aid eligibility standing, and CMU scholarship standing will not be negatively impacted in Spring 2020 due to COVID 19. This is true whether the student earns an A, B, C, D, F, S, or U grade.
For example, for academic standing:
- A student who started the semester in good academic standing will be posted with good academic standing at the end of Spring 2020.
- A student who started the semester on academic probation in Spring 2020 may improve their standing to good standing if they did well, otherwise it will stay as academic probation. No student will be moved to academic suspension.

Note that it takes several weeks to review and award degrees.
