What is Panopto?

Panopto is an easy-to-use tool for lecture capture or recording content inside or outside the classroom. The software is available for use on all campus classroom computers, which now have webcams installed at the instructor stations. It can also be installed on any PC, laptop, or mobile device.

With Panopto, you can record your screen and audio, as well as video from a webcam. Panopto is integrated with D2L and recordings are automatically uploaded to the Panopto server, where they can be shared with your students.

Benefits of Panopto

  • Versatile: Panopto can capture anything on your computer screen (from PowerPoint slides to complex animations), document cameras, and video from just about any camera. Once captured, recordings are processed into an interactive web format that students can watch on any device.
  • Integrated: Panopto integrates with our learning management system, D2L. All recordings can easily be created right from your D2L course shell.
  • Searchable: Panopto automatically indexes all of your recordings so that students can find and fast-forward to words that are mentioned in the lecture, displayed on-screen, or appear anywhere else in the video.

Archive and Retention Policy

Starting August 1, 2023, any videos not viewed within the last 6 months will be moved from Primary Storage to Archived Storage.  Videos moved to Archived Storage are still searchable but require 48 hours to retrieve for viewing. Next August 1, 2024, CMU will take further action to reduce storage costs by implementing a secondary video retention policy that will auto-delete videos archived after 2 years. This provides users with over a year to prepare for any policy change that would permanently delete a video. Please refer to IT's updated Panopto File Retention guide for more information.
