Students may declare a pre-Social Work major at any time, including upon admission to CMU. This pre-Social Work major designation indicates a student’s interest in pursuing a social work major and connects them to a social work advisor. The pre-Social Work major designation does not guarantee that students will be accepted into the BSW program. Students must complete a formal application process, which gives them an opportunity to be considered for admission into the BSW program. Students are encouraged to meet with the Social Work advisor to review your degree specific plan prior to applying. We currently accept up to 25 students per academic year.

In order to be eligible to apply to the BSW program, a student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Social Work Introductory and Social Work Foundation courses are completed or in progress:
    1. SOWK 150 Introduction to Social Work
    2. SOWK 210 Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) in Social Work
    3. PSYC 150 General Psychology
    4. PSYC 233 Human Growth and Development
    5. POLS 236 State and Local Government
  2. Completion of at least 60 credits by the end of the summer before the BSW program's fall semester start.
    1. Students are highly encouraged to complete CMU Essential Learning, Foundation Foreign Language, and Lower Division Requirements, including Essential Speech and Maverick Milestone, prior to starting the BSW program.
  3. Minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.0 and minimum overall cumulative social work GPA of 2.5.

The BSW program will be accepting applications between December 1st and February 1st for those who are interested in beginning the program in the following fall.
