With CMU Upward Bound and BSW interns, we created a first-gen mentorship program focused on belonging, with weekly meetings.
We helped connect first-gen pre-nursing (BSN) students with current CMU nursing students and Health Sciences staff.
Future Plans For Retention & Programs
Building on existing advising and enrollment systems, the Subcommittee will use summer IRIS training sessions to equip staff with best practices for supporting first-generation students, with plans to expand to faculty during fall orientations. During Welcome Week in August 2025, the subcommittee is designing a “First Friday” event to connect new first-generation students with critical campus resources and their fellow Fearless First-Gen Mavericks. This event will be held after students have successfully completed one week of college coursework and provide opportunities for staff and faculty to engage and support students.
