Overview
YuJa Panorama is CMU’s new accessibility tool for digital content.
Creating accessible course content isn’t just about compliance, it’s about ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. It’s more important than ever to provide materials that are usable by all, and YuJa Panorama helps make that possible by assisting faculty to identify, fix, and improve the accessibility of their digital course content within D2L.
Beginning in Fall 2025, CMU is launching YuJa Panorama within D2L to support faculty in creating more inclusive learning experiences and to advance CMU’s commitment to accessibility and equity.
YuJa Panorama is an accessibility platform that integrates directly into D2L. It works in the background to scan course materials for accessibility issues, offers real-time feedback, provides suggestions for fixes, and even provides students with alternative formats.
With Panorama, faculty can make meaningful improvements to digital accessibility. The tool helps faculty quickly spot accessibility issues and fix them with step-by-step guidance and a simple, user-friendly interface.
- Automatic Content Scanning
- When you upload a file (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, or other content) Panorama instantly checks for accessibility issues such as missing alt text, low contrast, untagged PDFs, and improper heading structures.
- Alternative Formats for Students
- Students can download course materials in formats that fit their learning needs, including audio (MP3), ePub (for e-readers), HTML (mobile-friendly), electronic Braille, and tagged PDFs. This flexibility benefits learners with visual impairments, reading disabilities, or those who prefer audio or mobile learning.
- Visual Accessibility Scores
- Each file receives an accessibility score that is visible to faculty only, allowing for quick identification of areas needing improvement. Clicking on the score opens a detailed breakdown of what’s wrong and how to fix it.
- Faculty Remediation Tools
- YuJa Panorama doesn’t just tell you what’s wrong, it offers the opportunity to fix many of the issues directly within D2L. For each issue, you’ll receive a plain-language description of the problem and clear steps for correcting it. All revised documents are stored as separate versions in the YuJa Panorama cloud, ensuring you can always access the original.
Using YuJa Panorama is straightforward and integrates seamlessly into your existing workflow:
- Upload Content as Usual: No need to change your workflow. Upload files to your course the same way you always do.
- Review the Accessibility Indicators: Look for the accessibility icon or score next to each file. This is your cue to review and improve the file, if needed.
- Make Improvements: Use the feedback provided to fix accessibility issues.
- Monitor Overall Course Accessibility: Panorama gives you a course-level report summarizing how accessible your materials are overall. Use this to prioritize the most urgent fixes.
The Department of Justice's final rule under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that all digital content created for University business must be accessible by April 24, 2026. This means everything we create or use online needs to work for everyone, including course materials, websites, Word files, and PDFs.
Legal regulations (like Title II of the ADA or Colorado House Bill 21-1110), aren't just about following the rules, they are about demonstrating our values by making sure everyone can access education and information. Accessible content benefits everyone, not just students with disabilities. Students on mobile devices, those with varying learning preferences, or those studying in different environments all gain from multiple ways to engage with content.
With YuJa Panorama, CMU faculty can:
- Be informed by automated scanning
- Use alternative format generation
- Build more inclusive, student-centered courses
- Feel confident in working to meet accessibility standards
To get started with YuJa Panorama, consider the following tips:
- Take a moment to explore your D2L courses. Look for the accessibility icons next to your files and get a feel for which materials might need adjustments.
- Prioritize frequently used materials for the rest of the semester, such as weekly slides. Skip previously delivered content for now.
- This year, put your energy into fixing the most critical accessibility issues to make the biggest impact.
Continuous Improvement
Accessibility isn’t a one-time task; it’s an ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion. Even small steps can make a big difference in ensuring all students have equitable access to course materials. YuJa Panorama will help make that process easier and more scalable. Remember, it is about progress not perfection.
