Human Scale University Champion Award

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is committed to fostering a values-driven community where we serve one another, and where campus serves as a model of the world we want to create: AND

WHEREAS Professor Verner Johnson, in his fiftieth year of service as a faculty member at CMU, has exemplified humility and curiosity by developing the university’s Geographic Information Science (GIS) program and continuously revising and modernizing the curriculum so that students engage with current tools, data sources, and real-world applications; AND

WHEREAS Professor Johnson demonstrates love and dignity through his ongoing work with students on research projects that center student learning and success, inviting undergraduates into authentic inquiry and mentoring them with patience, care, and high expectations; AND

WHEREAS by leading a week of Geology Field Camp in the Henry Mountains every summer for many years, Professor Johnson embodies courage, resiliency, and curiosity, creating transformative field-based learning experiences that challenge students to work together, solve complex problems outdoors, and see the natural world as a living laboratory; AND

WHEREAS Professor Johnson models resiliency and intellectual curiosity by sustaining an active scholarly agenda and publishing papers annually, even in his fiftieth year of teaching, demonstrating to students and colleagues alike that learning and discovery are lifelong commitments; AND

WHEREAS Professor Johnson exemplifies power used for good through his extraordinary work ethic and student-centered presence, often in his office and labs at uncommon hours when few others are on campus, making himself available to answer questions, review projects, and support students when they most need guidance; AND

WHEREAS through teaching loads that regularly include fifteen or more credits each semester, along with January Term and summer courses, Professor Johnson demonstrates humility and love by consistently going above and beyond formal expectations to expand access to essential courses and opportunities for CMU students; AND

WHEREAS over five decades of steadfast service, Professor Johnson has strengthened CMU’s academic reputation, enriched the lives of generations of students, and contributed significantly to the educational, cultural, and economic vitality of the region through his teaching, mentoring, scholarship, and leadership;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees hereby awards the Human Scale University Champion Award for December 2025 to Professor Verner Johnson. The Board expresses its deepest gratitude for his enduring commitment, exemplary service, and the transformative impact he has had on the CMU community.

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is committed to fostering a values-driven community where we serve one another, and where campus serves as a model of the world we want to create: AND

WHEREAS the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees adopted a Resolution Concerning Expectations Regarding Safety, Violence, Intimidation, Abuse and Discrimination at Colorado Mesa University on March 30, 2017; and

WHEREAS the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees adopted a Resolution Concerning Free Speech, Expression and Academic Inquiry on August 14, 2020; and

WHEREAS striking the appropriate balance between protecting free speech and protecting the physical safety of the entire campus community can only be achieved with thoughtful leadership of key individuals and partners across campus; AND

WHEREAS on March 27, 2025, the Colorado Mesa University campus was put to the test on balancing the protection of free speech with managing organized protests and heightened public and media attention; AND

WHEREAS student leaders Leilani Domingo, Alex Austin, James Garcia, Myles Newble and Isenia Fregoso fearlessly embodied CMU’s values by rallying the entire campus community to affirmatively use their voices and collective action on March 27, 2025, to organize and host the CMU Unity Fest with hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members; AND

WHEREAS CMU Student Life Director Trey Downey, CMU Assistant Director of Student Life Isabel Manzanarez, and CMU Manager of Operations of Student Life Gabriel Simon demonstrated patient, thoughtful and exceptional leadership in navigating the complexities surrounding the March 27, 2025, activities; AND

WHEREAS CMU Campus Safety Director Alex Zappe demonstrated calm and thoughtful leadership while bringing considerable professional experience to bear on the events of March 27, 2025; AND

WHEREAS the exceptional environment created on campus during the March 27, 2025, Unity Fest was made possible by the exceptional professionalism, courage, humility and leadership demonstrated by the entire Grand Junction Police Department and the personal involvement of Chief Matt Smith.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students, do hereby express our deepest gratitude to each of the aforementioned campus leaders for their exceptional work and example in personifying the CMU values of Love, Dignity, Courage, Humility, Resilience, Curiosity and Power on March 27, 2025.

WHEREAS, Jody Diers has dedicated her career to the service of students and the community, bringing decades of experience and leadership to the institutions she has been part of; AND

WHEREAS, Jody Diers has most recently served as the Vice President for Student Services, where her visionary leadership fostered an environment of support and growth for all students; AND

WHEREAS, Jody Diers previously served as Director of Residence Life, where she made an indelible impact by promoting a strong sense of community, responsibility, and personal development among students living on campus; AND

WHEREAS, Jody Diers also served with distinction as the long-time principal of Central High School, where her unwavering commitment to education and her genuine care for her students shaped the lives of countless young people; AND

WHEREAS, Jody Diers has exemplified a heart for students in every role she has undertaken, always prioritizing their well-being, academic success, and emotional growth, while maintaining an open door for anyone in need of guidance or support; AND

WHEREAS, her leadership style has always been rooted in servant leadership, leading by example with humility, integrity, and a commitment to empowering others to reach their full potential; AND

WHEREAS, Jody’s legacy of compassionate leadership, her commitment to fostering positive relationships, and her tireless advocacy for students will continue to inspire and shape the future of the Colorado Mesa University community for years to come; AND

WHEREAS, Jody Diers has earned the respect, admiration, and gratitude of her colleagues, students, and community members for her tireless work and dedication to the betterment of all;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students, do hereby express our deepest gratitude to Jody Diers for her exceptional contributions to the success and well-being of our institution and community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jody Diers on her retirement and wish her the very best in her future endeavors. Her impact will be felt for years to come, and she will be greatly missed.

WHEREAS Pua Utu, in longstanding service to CMU, has exemplified campus values through his unwavering dedication and service to CMU students and the broader university community; AND,

WHEREAS Pua was instrumental in creating a partnership between Colorado Mesa University and the City of Grand Junction Police Department, strengthening community ties and enhancing campus safety through collaboration and innovation; AND

WHEREAS as a guiding mentor Pua channeled his own cultural heritage to support and connect with CMU Polynesian and South Pacific students, providing them not only with soulful mentorship, but also a sense of home through welcoming dinners and meaningful connection; AND,

WHEREAS this support helped foster and grow CMU’s historical and special relationship with Polynesian communities and students; AND

WHEREAS Pua, as a former professional athlete, worked tirelessly to support CMU’s athletic programs, particularly football and South Pacific recruits, fostering trust and confidence in families by personally engaging with parents and reassuring them of their students’ well-being; AND

WHEREAS in his role as Director of Safety and Student Conduct, Pua has been an indispensable resource for campus safety and emergency management, being available 24/7 for over 15 years and providing calm, effective leadership during critical situations; AND

WHEREAS as a Quiet Leader, Pua elevated Colorado Mesa University and created a sense of safety through his strength, approachability, respect and engagement, fostering a true sense of belonging for not only students but the faculty and fellow staff he served;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees hereby awards the Human Scale University Champion Award for December 2024 to Pua Utu. The Board expresses its deepest gratitude for his enduring commitment, exemplary service, and the transformative impact he has had on the CMU community.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University is rooted in countless moments where faculty and staff transcend traditional roles to break down barriers, forge human connections, and inspire others through the transformative power of education; AND

WHEREAS the arts—encompassing theatre, music, and dance—serve as vital cultural touchstones, nurturing human intimacy and connection, and contributing to the holistic development of individuals and communities; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University is committed to enriching the human experience through exposure to the performing arts, recognizing that the arts are essential to fostering empathy, cultural awareness, and emotional connection; AND

WHEREAS the University proudly serves a diverse student body, including first-generation, low-income, and non-traditional students, demonstrating that the arts provide a universal language that transcends socioeconomic barriers; AND

WHEREAS academic leaders at Colorado Mesa University not only teach and advise students, but also mentor faculty, engage in creative scholarship, and cultivate cultural and artistic excellence; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees hold in high regard the culture of servant leadership, which extends beyond academia to touch every aspect of the university and community life; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves the region and the State of Colorado by cultivating a deep appreciation for the arts, contributing to the well-being of society and addressing complex cultural and social issues through creative expression; AND

WHEREAS Associate Professor of Theatre Arts, Mr. Maurice LaMee, and Professor of Music, Dr. Darin Kamstra, have played pivotal roles in building vibrant, interdisciplinary programs in theatre, dance, and music, that bridge education and artistic expression; AND

WHEREAS through their dedication and leadership, Mr. LaMee and Dr. Kamstra have expanded access to the arts through camps, festivals, and world-class performances, enriching the lives of students and the broader community; AND

WHEREAS Mr. LaMee and Dr. Kamstra have contributed immeasurably to the opening of the Asteria Theatre, ensuring that it stands as a beacon for the performing arts, meeting the highest standards of artistic and educational excellence;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees hereby awards the October 2024 Human Scale University Champion Award to Associate Professor of Theatre, Mr. Maurice LaMee, and Professor of Music, Dr. Darin Kamstra, in recognition of their tireless efforts and profound contributions to bringing the transformative power of the arts to our campus, region, and state.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty and staff members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students, and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees value the culture of servant leadership across the campus; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University leadership recognizes the contributions of volunteerism and the impact it makes on the university community; AND

WHEREAS Scholarship Cohort Coordinator and Women’s Rugby Coach, Mackenzie Lewis, has served as a mentor, counselor, advisor, and coach and contributed to the success of many areas across campus including the Admissions Department, GOALS Program and IRIS Department as well as the Women’s Rugby Team; AND

WHEREAS Ms. Lewis serves members of the campus community through her work with 200+ individual students, most of whom are first generation, guiding them throughout their educational journey; AND

WHEREAS Mackenzie Lewis aims to make sure every single person she works with graduates and has a clear path forward while serving as a mentor and leader for scholarship cohort students including the Guardian Scholar Program, Denver Scholarship Fund, and Reisher Scholar Program; AND

WHEREAS Ms. Lewis has demonstrated extreme compassion and served as a friend and immense support for fellow Maverick Andy Smith and his family during his time at Colorado Mesa University while battling a brain tumor resulting in bringing the entire campus community together during an extremely difficult time; AND

WHEREAS Ms. Lewis is always willing to assist with whatever is needed and operates with a high level of integrity in all she does.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the April 2024 Human Scale University Champion award to, Scholarship Cohort Coordinator and Women’s Rugby Coach, Mackenzie Lewis. The entire University wishes to thank Mackenzie Lewis for setting an example of tireless work and dedication to help our campus & community, by consistently showing Love, Dignity, Courage, Humility, Resilience, Curiosity and Power.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty and staff members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University leadership regularly receives compliments from students, parents, and community members about the outstanding quality of classroom instruction from seasoned practitioners with deep experience; AND

WHEREAS the economic health of western Colorado depends on a thriving Colorado Mesa University preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs, business leaders and practitioners of multiple disciplines; AND

WHEREAS for many years former Marmot Mountain Works, Timberland Company, Swiss Army Brands and Colorado Mesa University executive Rick Taggart has shared his expertise in the classroom teaching international business, management and marketing courses in the Davis School of Business as the Executive in Residence; AND

WHEREAS hundreds of Mesa County high school graduates have been able to pursue postsecondary credentials at Colorado Mesa University and CMU Tech over the past decade due to the Grand Junction Opportunity Scholarship program championed by then-Grand Junction Mayor Rick Taggart; AND

WHEREAS the cause of drawing attention and recognition to first-generation serving institutions of higher learning in Colorado has no better friend than State Representative Rick Taggart; AND

WHEREAS a human scale university benefits from committed partners advancing the cause of Colorado Mesa University students in the halls of power

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the January 2024 Human Scale University Champion award to State Representative Rick Taggart.

The entire University wishes to thank Representative Taggart for setting an example of tireless work and dedication on campus and the broader community.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty and staff members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University leadership regularly receives compliments from students, parents, and community members about the outstanding qualities of CMU faculty members; AND

WHEREAS the social and intellectual health of the region depends on highly qualified academic experts being willing to share their expertise to help contextualize and understand complex matters; AND

WHEREAS a thriving university campus relies on professors embracing academic freedom in the pursuit of truth; AND

WHEREAS CMU Professor of History Doug O’Roark, Professor of Political Science Tim Casey and Assistant Professor Holly Oberle exemplified the values of CMU’s Human Scale Campus by facilitating a difficult conversation surrounding the ongoing conflict in Israel in front of over five hundred members of the community on October 24, 2023 ; AND

WHEREAS CMU Professor Doug O’Roark, Professor Tim Casey and Assistant Professor Holly Oberle set a shining example of how CMU faculty and staff members can engage in community with one another in a healthy, civil and informed dialogue on even the most complex issues of our day

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the December, 2023 Human Scale University Champion award to CMU Professor of History Doug O’Roark, CMU Professor of Political Science Tim Casey and CMU Assistant Professor of Political Science Holly Oberle.

WHEREAS the Montrose Campus of Colorado Mesa University has grown dramatically in the past decade to meet the needs of students in southwest Colorado; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees value the culture of servant leadership across all University campuses; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves the region and the entire State of Colorado with unique expertise, experience and the ability to contribute towards solving complex social problems; AND

WHEREAS CMU Montrose Campus Director Steve Metheny has shared his unique expertise, leadership, positive attitude, and sense of humor with the Colorado Mesa University Montrose Campus for approximately thirty years; AND

WHEREAS the countless positive interactions Steve Metheny has facilitated as a teacher, volunteer, administrator, and leader have positively contributed to the success of Colorado Mesa University Montrose and the University overall.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the October, 2023 Human Scale University Champion award to Colorado Mesa University Montrose Campus Director Steve Metheny. The entire University wishes to thank Steve for setting an example of tireless work and dedication on campus. Steve’s contagious positive attitude helps the entire campus community in our work becoming a human scale university.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty and staff members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS a central feature of Colorado Mesa University’s success as a human scale university is our commitment to small class sizes and highly qualified faculty and instructors who focus on teaching; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students, and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees value the culture of servant leadership across the campus; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University leadership recognizes the contributions of volunteerism and the impact it makes on the university community; AND

WHEREAS Technical Instructor of Transportation Services, Mike Carsten, has contributed to the creation of academic programs such as the AAS in Diesel Technology to help fulfill the demand for diesel technicians in the region as well as assisted in the development of a robust apprenticeship program that allows students to hone their skills through hands-on experience and serves the broader community’s workforce needs; AND

WHEREAS Mr. Carsten has freely given of his time and expertise to serve as a trainer for the city of Fruita for ASE tests, oversee the annual campus car show which raises money for concurrent students to continue their education, and assist with summer camps each year; AND

WHEREAS Mr. Carsten serves his broader community through service as the Chaplain for the Black Sheep Harley Davidsons for Christ Motorcycle Club, volunteering at Camp Hope serving local at-risk youth, and establishing Integrity Farming which provides fresh produce to those in need.

WHEREAS Mr. Carsten is always willing to assist with whatever is needed and operates with a high level of integrity in all he does.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the August 2023 Human Scale University Champion award to, Technical Instructor for Transportation Services, Mr. Mike Carsten. The entire University wishes to thank Mr. Carsten for setting an example of tireless work and dedication to help our community, region, state, and nation by consistently showing Love, Dignity, Courage, Humility and Power.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty and staff members go the extra mile to break down barriers and establish human connections; AND

WHEREAS the health and vibrancy of any organization depends upon a shared commitment to building and nurturing a strong culture; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University is proud to recruit and hire staff and faculty who share the institution’s passion for changing lives; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees value the culture of servant leadership across the campus; AND

WHEREAS the entire University community benefits when employees leverage their personal talent, assets, and passion to help build organizational culture; AND

WHEREAS CMU Head Baseball Coach Chris Hanks has developed numerous student athletes in over 25 years as an educator and coach and has developed a baseball program that has earned the respect of administrators, coaches, families, and baseball players throughout the region and across the country.

WHEREAS Coach Hanks has won over 1,000 games as a baseball coach which was accomplished faster than of any other baseball coach in Division II baseball history and moved him into the top-60 coaches in all-time wins in NCAA Baseball history; AND

WHEREAS Coach Hanks has led our great University to 11 straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships and a total of 18 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships during his tenure at Colorado Mesa.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the May 2023 Human Scale University Champion award to, Head Baseball Coach Chris Hanks. The entire University wishes to thank Coach Hanks for setting an example of tireless work and dedication in our work becoming a human scale university.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty and staff members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS a central feature of Colorado Mesa University’s success as a human scale university is our commitment to small class sizes and highly qualified faculty members who focus on teaching; AND

WHEREAS Associate Professor of Kinesiology, Dr. Elizabeth Sharp, Ph.D. has helped develop a robust physical education teaching program which allows students to hone their skills through hands-on experience and serves the broader community by providing a longstanding physical education program for homeschool children; AND

WHEREAS Dr. Sharp has freely given of her time and expertise to serve on multiple boards including the Board of Directors for SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) where she recently advocated at the national level for quality health and physical education; AND

WHEREAS Dr. Sharp has openly shared about her personal experiences and exemplifies the boldness of resiliency in the face of adversity and how each of us can use our unique experiences, skills, and knowledge to teach, mentor and impact those around us

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the March 2023 Human Scale University Champion award to, Associate Professor of Kinesiology, Dr. Elizabeth Sharp.

The entire University wishes to thank Dr. Sharp for setting an example of tireless work and dedication to help our community, region, state, and nation learn about and appreciate lifelong learning and movement.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty, staff, alumni and community members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves the region and the entire State of Colorado with unique expertise, experience and the ability to contribute towards solving complex social problems; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees value the culture of servant leadership across the campus; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University leadership recognizes the contributions of volunteerism and the impact it makes on the university community; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University Technical Instructor & Program Director, Pam Holder has freely given of her time, including nights and weekends, to double program credit hours in the last five years by meeting with and supporting prospective and current students; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University Pam Holder selflessly demonstrates her love for our community through her actions, which include planning and promoting blanket and clothing giveaways for the homeless, hand-making protective masks during the COVID pandemic, creating partnerships with community healthcare providers to share information and resources, and offering healthcare instruction across the western slope through the Community Education Center; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University Pam Holder’s positivity, hopefulness, and humility offers encouragement to all who encounter her as she models servant leadership through her actions every day.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the October 2022 Human Scale University Champion award to Technical Instructor & Program Director, Pam Holder.

The entire University wishes to thank Mrs. Holder for setting an example of tireless work and dedication on campus. Mrs. Holder’s affirmative attitude and commitment to serving others helps the entire campus community in our work becoming a human scale university.

WHEREAS CMU Senior Graphic Artist, Brand Manager and Mascot Program Coordinator Jeremy Smith exemplifies the Maverick Spirit through his work, passion, creativity and attitude each and every day

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the August 2022 Human Scale University Champion award to CMU Staff Member Jeremy Smith.

The entire University wishes to thank Mr. Smith for using creativity to build culture. By going beyond his daily duties to use his skills and talents as a craftsperson to establish how we can all practice gratitude in our daily lives. His efforts and attitude help the entire campus community in our work becoming a human scale university.

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University's goal is to become the university of choice for students; AND

WHEREAS the university continues to manage its resources to strengthen financial and organizational structures to maintain affordability; AND

WHEREAS budget resources are allocated to align with strategic goals and directions; AND

WHEREAS university decision-making is student-centric and informed by data; AND

WHEREAS Whitney Sutton has served as Budget Director at Colorado Mesa University for 25 years and during this time has balanced competing needs and demands, maximized the use of university resources, planned for the long-term stability of the university, all while supporting CMU's mission to make higher education accessible; AND

WHEREAS Whitney Sutton, in addition to her position as Budget Director, agreed to take on leadership for the Food Service portfolio and has valiantly strived to maintain affordability, improve quality and expand student options; AND

WHEREAS Whitney Sutton collaborates with university partners to deliver the best product at the best price for students and to offer viable food options for students who are under resourced; AND

WHEREAS Whitney Sutton works tirelessly on behalf of the university mining data, tracking financial information, offering advice and assisting colleagues in ways to help them achieve their goals; AND

WHEREAS Whitney Sutton accepted the last-minute call to lead the opening of Devil's Kitchen at the Hotel Maverick; AND

WHEREAS students' basic needs are placed first and foremost as she works to alleviate food insecurity on campus with the development of the food pantry; AND

WHEREAS she has played an integral role in many initiatives that directly impact student lives, including helping the university become a Hunger Free Campus through innovation and leadership.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the May, 2022 Human Scale University Champion award to Director of Budget & Food Service Programs Whitney Sutton.

The entire University wishes to thank Ms. Sutton for setting an example of dedicated leadership, fortitude and consistency in serving our students and community.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty and staff members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS faculty members at Colorado Mesa University carry a full load including teaching, advising, scholarly activity and service; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees value the teacher-scholar model for faculty across the campus; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University provides the region and the entire State of Colorado with a talented pool of leaders that includes accomplished scientists, artists, and scholars; AND

WHEREAS Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Johanna Varner consistently mentors biology students in research activities leading to their presentations at national conferences; AND

WHEREAS Dr. Johanna Varner supports and engages the next generation of female leaders by developing a new pathway for Girl Scouts to receive their Think Like a Citizen Scientist Journey award badge through a free online module; AND

WHEREAS Dr. Johanna Varner builds strong partnerships with leaders in STEM and those within the scientific community to better understand the world around her; AND

WHEREAS Dr. Johanna Varner has made significant contributions to the state of Colorado as a facilitator of citizen science, public science engagement, and pika research; AND

WHEREAS Dr. Varner has been honored for those contributions as part of the Smithsonian Institute’s Women’s Futures Month and a life-size statue in Dr. Varner’s likeness is on display on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. March 5-27, 2022 to celebrate her work as part of the #IfThenSheCan exhibit;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the March, 2022 Human Scale University Champion award to CMU Associate Professor Johanna Varner.

The entire University wishes to thank Dr. Varner for her contributions to CMU, and the nation, as a scientist and teacher.

WHEREAS the success of Colorado Mesa University depends on the collection of individual moments where faculty, staff, alumni and community members go the extra mile to break down barriers, establish human connections and help others with solving problems; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves a diverse student body including first-generation students, low-income students and non-traditional students; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University serves the region and the entire State of Colorado with unique expertise, experience and the ability to contribute towards solving complex social problems; AND

WHEREAS both the Colorado Mesa University administration and the Board of Trustees value the culture of servant leadership across the campus; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University leadership recognizes the contributions of volunteerism and the impact it makes on the university community; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University Alumnus Mr. Lenton Thomas has been a champion of the Colorado Mesa University Athletics Department and the Maverick Football team and has contributed to the success of the Denver Area Chapter of the CMU Alumni Association; AND has helped plan many events such as the CMU Legends & Celebrities Golf Tournament, Homecoming reunions, and many front range gatherings; AND

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University Alumnus Mr. Lenton Thomas has freely given his time and expertise to raise funds to support the team's student athletes and program expenses; AND he is always willing to bring his best foot forward both on and off the field to create the most success for the Mavericks.

WHEREAS Colorado Mesa University Alumnus Mr. Lenton Thomas served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1974-1987; AND he has been a philanthropic member of his community by participating on the Colorado board for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation for eight consecutive years

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the January, 2022 Human Scale University Champion award to CMU Alumnus Mr. Lenton Thomas.

WHEREAS Lucy Graham, Ph.D., Director of Nursing Education Programs and Assistant Professor of Nursing demonstrates leadership and unique expertise, skills, and passion for community health and disease prevention. She has worked tirelessly to assist students in applying knowledge gained in the classroom to testing, vaccination and education efforts necessary for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic; including assisting individual students to find scientifically sound pathways to safety that square with their personal beliefs ; AND

WHEREAS Dr. Graham has freely volunteered her time, subject matter expertise, and her talents in engaging students in real-world learning to create innovative solutions to combating COVID and gave nursing student-leaders real-world clinical learning; AND

WHEREAS As a leader among all levels of CMU’s Nursing faculty, she promotes collegiality, kindness, and collaborative decision-making.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the December, 2021 Human Scale University Champion award to Dr. Lucy Graham.

WHEREAS Professor John Seebach’s work applying his unique expertise, skills and knowledge surrounding the history of the Teller Institute provides meaningful opportunities for CMU students to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to a challenging real world problem

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES hereby awards the August, 2021 Human Scale University Champion award to Assistant Professor John Seebach.
