Applying for Financial Aid

Step 1: Create Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) and the FAFSA

Obtain an FSA ID.

  • The FSA ID is a secure way to confirm your identity when accessing your financial aid information.
  • The FSA ID must be used by students and parents to electronically sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Master Promissory Note(s)
  • Both the student and the parent will need an FSA ID (if the student is considered a dependent)
  • You will use this each year that you apply for federal aid and to complete Master Promissory Notes.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • The FAFSA is the federal government's application to determine financial aid eligibility for most types of financial aid.
  • Applications can be filled out online.
  • Login using the student's FSA ID username and password.
  • Be sure to list Colorado Mesa University in order for us to receive your information. Our school code is 001358.

Step 2:  Complete the Verification (if needed)

  • Login to your MAVzone account by going to :  https://coloradomesa.edu/mavzone/login
  • Click the "Student Finance" tab
  • Red flags on the right indicate missing material
  • Click on the item and follow the instructions to complete

If no additional documentation is needed, you will receive an "Award Letter". 

  • First time students will receive an award letter in the mail in addition to being able to view their award in their MAVzone.
  • Returning students will be able to view their award offer in their MAVzone account.

Step 3:  Accept Terms and Conditions/Accept Aid

  • Login to your MAVzone account by going to :  https://coloradomesa.edu/mavzone/login
  • Click the "Student Finance" tab
  • On the right, look for the "Financial Aid On-line" box
  • Go to Review Your Financial Aid Offer Links
    • Click "Review your award offer" then the "Award Overview" tab to see the awards being offered to you
    • Click "Accept Terms and Conditions" tab to read and accept
    • Click "Accept Award" tab to accept full or partial offer
  • If no extra documentation is needed, you will receive an "Award Letter". 
    • First time students will receive an award letter in the mail in addition to being able to view their award in their MAVzone.
    • Returning students will be able to view their award offer in their MAVzone account.

Step 4: Complete Student Master Promissory Note and Direct Loan Entrance Counseling

Step 5:  Complete Federal Direct PLUS (Parent) Authorization Form (if needed)

Step 6:  Complete a Federal Direct PLUS (Parent) Master Promissory Note (if needed)

Step 7:  Apply for Private (Alternative) Loans (if needed)

  • Available for students who are not eligible for federal loans or for those who need assistance beyond their federal financial eligibility.
  • Arrange for cosigner if needed
  • Go to https://elmselect.com/ for more information on Private Loans
  • Proceeds from private loans will not disburse until at least 6 days after a loan is approved

This process will take at least 6 - 8 weeks from application for aid until aid is disbursed.
