Beginning Guitar (Limited to the first 24 students who register per offering)
This class is for students who have no or very little experience playing guitar. Students will learn basic note reading, basic chords, basic strumming patterns and apply them to simple songs. Guitars are provided, but if you have your own, bring it!
Camp Choir
This class is for anyone who enjoys singing or wishes to experience singing in a choir for the first time. No singing experience required!
Drum Circle
Have fun and learn about musical rhythm, texture, and improvisation while playing various percussion instruments! We will jam, play musical games, and meet new friends. No percussion experience is necessary.
Drumline (Limited to the first 15 students who register)
Venture into the world of Drumline! In this enrichment class, you will learn the techniques needed to be a future member of the MavRoon Platoon. Hone your skills on snare, quints, bass drum, or cymbals!
Exploring the Keyboard (Limited to the first 32 students who register)
Do you want to play your favorites songs on your keyboard? This course is designed for those interested in learning basic skills for performing keyboards in contemporary music such us rock, pop, funk or even Latin music. Learn how to use triad concepts in a fun way throughout the application of group and individual rhythmic exercises.
Exploring the Native American Flute (Limited to the first 16 students who register)
Have you ever wanted to take an instrument and play in the canyons of Colorado with no music - only your perception of your surroundings and how they make you feel? That is what our Native Americans did with their instruments - flutes and percussion. You will have a chance to hear and see Native American flutes and perform using a Native American style flute and various percussion instruments in the style of Native American music. It can be very simple or fairly complex.
History of Rock
When did Rock and Roll start? Who are some of the most influential bands? In this class we'll be discussing these questions and more. Be ready to watch lots of videos and listen to lots of different styles of rock.
Mariachi
Bienvenido a todos! Welcome, everyone! Join me in this class as we learn traditional mariachi performance styles. We will learn how to play new instruments, sing, or perform mariachi styles on our primary instruments. Vihuelas and guitarrones will be provided. Students who play violin, trumpet, or guitar should bring those instruments.
Music Technology (Limited to the first 32 students who register per offering)
You may already play an instrument, but can you play a computer? Not video games, but turning the computer into a musical instrument. Come and join us in the Tech Lab for some music creation with Garage Band. We will combine pre-recorded loops with your own synthesized creations to produce a CD that you can take home. (If you already have Garage Band experience or have taken this class before at music camp, please choose something else.)
Jazz Band
Jazz Band uses a standard big band instrumentation (saxophones, trombones, trumpets, guitar, piano, bass, drums) and is open to students by audition. Let the faculty member running your audition know you are interested in auditioning for jazz band as well. Students who are not placed in the jazz band will be placed in another enrichment course.
Jazz Improvisation
Students will learn the skills to play a jazz improvisation solo. No prior jazz experience necessary.
Songwriting
This class is for anyone who wants to explore writing a song of their own. No prior experience needed... just a bit of courage to try something new! Students will write their own lyrics, compose their own melody, and choose harmonies to go with the melody they write.
School of Rock (Limited to the first 16 who register per offering)
Are you ready to rock? Have you ever wanted to be in a rock band? Students will learn the basics of playing in a Modern Band. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, or vocal skills necessary to play in a modern band setting. Instruments are provided.
Ukulele (Limited to the first 30 students who register per offering)
Learn how to play the ukulele, no prior experience required! Students will learn basic chords, basic strumming patterns and apply them to various songs. Ukuleles are provided.
Directions for Drop Off and Pick Up:
Colorado Mesa University Music Camp is held in the Moss Performing Arts Center on the southeast part of campus (on 12th St. near the corner of 12th and North). Commuter students are dropped off in front of Moss Performing Arts Center and picked up in the parking lot surrounding the Outdoor Program (#9) on the Campus Map.
Check-In:
Everyone checks in between 1–3pm on June 4 in the Robinson Theatre lobby in the Moss Performing Arts Center, building #22 on the campus map.
Auditions:
Auditions begin at 1:15pm on June 4. Quietly wait outside your audition room until there is an opening. You may put your cases in Robinson Theatre and warm up.
Required Forms at time of Check-In:
Completed medical form (hard copy). Liability Waiver and Photo Release are agreed to during online registration.
Audition Material:
Instrumentalists bring an etude, exercise from your method book or part of a solo for auditions. Be prepared to play major scales up to 2 sharps/flats for your instrument and chromatic scale (one octave).
Meals:
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided on campus for all students staying overnight. Lunch and dinner will be provided on campus for commuter students.
NOTE: The fee for a lost card is $15.00.
Tuition and Payment:
$550 including overnight accommodations on campus
$425 without accommodations
Includes all meals Sunday evening through Friday lunch
Note: The fee for a lost residence hall room key is $30.00.
Evening Activities:
Camp runs until 9:30pm each evening. Evening activities include a Game Night, Movie Night, Faculty Recital and Student Talent Night, and Sectional and Enrichment Course Performance Night. All students are expected to participate in evening activities whether staying on campus or commuting. Please see the Daily Schedule below for more information.
Registration deadline:
Enrollment is limited by instrument, so please register early to ensure a spot. Once enrollment caps are reached, registration will close for that instrument or voice group.
Important: If you have registered but cannot attend camp, please email or call immediately to let us know. We need to be notified if you are not attending!
Final Concert:
Friday, June 9 at 1pm.
Concert Dress: Black pants or shorts and camp t-shirt. Save the t-shirt for the concert.
Cell Phones:
Students are allowed to have cell phones during Music Camp, but they will need to be turned off during rehearsals or classes.
