Political Science

Are you intrigued by American politics and international affairs? Do you find yourself engaged in spirited political discussions?   Do you desire to be better informed about the political process and international affairs?   Do your future plans include a career in politics, government, journalism, law or non-governmental organizations?   If you answered yes to any of these questions, a degree in political science may be right for you.

Students studying political science develop a strong foundation in the concepts, theories, and approaches of the discipline.   Students are exposed to a wide variety of topics ranging from American political institutions (e.g. presidency, congress) to comparative politics, international relations, public policy, public administration and political behavior.   Not only are our students exposed to a wide variety of theories of politics, they are encouraged to apply their newfound knowledge to real-world situations.   Our program accomplishes this by providing a variety of learning environments ranging from traditional classroom discussions to simulations, internships, and student groups.

An attractive aspect of Colorado Mesa University's political science program is the opportunity that our students have to intern in a variety of settings and locations (including Washington D.C., Denver, and Grand Junction).   Experience has shown that internships are not only valuable educational experiences, but that they also provide a solid base for future employment.   Previous Colorado Mesa University students are now working in jobs obtained directly as a result of their internship experience.

Students interested in studying political science have the option to pursue a B.A. degree or a minor in political science. The B.A. degree is useful for gaining employment in government, elections and non-governmental organizations, and for gaining entrance to law school and graduate school.   The minor is an excellent compliment to a wide variety of other Colorado Mesa University degree programs in the social sciences and journalism.
