Student Success & Engagement (SSE) takes a holistic approach to supporting students through their individual transitions into university life. Our mission is to help students develop the skills needed to succeed in college and learn to utilize resources available in the campus community. Through a collaborative effort between the student, SSE staff, and peer coaches, SSE is a place where success becomes as individual as you.
Because each student is somebody with a unique set of circumstances, SSE offers five diverse programs, each with its own mission. This gives SSE a wide range of opportunities to focus on the needs of individual students.
Are you newly admitted to CMU and an SSE program? You need to sign up for New Student Orientation, where you will be registered for classes and learn more about what CMU has to offer.

The Compass Program opens the door to CMU for students who exhibit high potential for completing a bachelor’s degree but whose academic record falls just short of CMU’s standard admission requirements. Compass Program participants take regular CMU courses while receiving extra academic support and one-on-one advising designed to help them successfully transition into college life during their first year. The Compass program also helps students to develop learning strategies, navigate degree paths, understand college and personal finances, and set goals for their college experience.
GOALS Program provides academic and personal assistance to Mavericks that want to transition from a two-year Associate degree program into a four-year baccalaureate degree program. This program gives you the skills, tools, and motivation to make sure the transition is successful.
TRIO - Student Support Services serves first-generation students and/or students that meet low-income guidelines and/or students with documented disabilities. The program helps students achieve their academic potential through workshops, mentoring, academic advising, career counseling, financial planning, as well as professional and personal development. The funding source for TRIO is through a grant from the United States Department of Education.
The COSI program, or the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative, gives Mavericks in financial need opportunities to pursue their college degree by providing scholarships. The program also couples tuition assistance with student support, which allows CMU to provide COSI scholarship recipients with success coaches to support them in their higher education careers. COSI is a program of the Colorado Department of Higher Education.
The Mentors are CMU professionals that assist students in navigating the complexities of higher education through personal and academic support. Common areas of support include advocacy, negotiating faculty/student relationships, and supporting students through their college and life transitions. Mentors help students to develop as a "whole person" by connecting them to useful campus and community resources and supports.
