The Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI), designed in 2014, was created to increase the attainment of postsecondary credentials for students in Colorado. The program addresses this challenge in two ways: accessibility and affordability. Through thoughtfully designed programming, COSI has leveraged millions of dollars to serve more than 75,000 students across key programs focused on access and affordability in the first five years in the state of Colorado. To increase affordability, COSI provides financial support to students via matching funds for community scholarships so that tuition and other costs are not a barrier to entry and help to reduce student loan debt. COSI also provides wraparound services so COSI scholars have access to postsecondary education and the support needed to persist and complete their college education. COSI is here to help Colorado meet its goal of 66% Colorado citizen degree completion by 2025.

  • Annually, CMU serves over 600 students with the COSI scholarship
  • Participants have up to $4000 less debt per year, on average
  • Statewide, students with COSI support persist at a rate of 92% from year one to year two
  • COSI at CMU serves a diverse group, including students local to Mesa, Montrose, and Delta counties, displaced workers, and students who have decided to come back to school
