Morgan Lewis, PhD, teaches Introduction to Groundwater, Structural Geology, and Weather and Climate at CMU. She enjoys introducing students to the natural wonders of both our home planet as well as our neighbors elsewhere in the Solar System. Her teaching style incorporates tactile hands-on demonstrations, relevant current events and real-world examples to engage students with the material in her courses.

Lewis' current research utilizes data from the Curiosity rover on Mars to understand how rocks fracture on Mars, whether groundwater fluids traversed those fractures and what those fractures reveal about the depositional, deformational and hydrologic past of the red planet. Her previous research explored the geochemical and mineralogical changes developed during the chemical weathering of granite and how those processes may vary laterally across a given weathering profile. In general, Lewis loves delving into the intersection between structural geology and low-temperature geochemistry, both on Earth and on Mars, to understand how physical and chemical deformation influence and alter rock preservation.
