An interdisciplinary geoscientist by training, Marion McKenzie, PhD, teaches courses in Physical Geology and Geographic Information Systems and Technology (GIST). She incorporates student-led interests into her teaching and enjoys learning new things from students as they explore geoscience topics using the essentials taught from her courses.

McKenzie is primarily interested in subglacial processes and how records left at Earth's surface can tell us about the ongoing processes beneath modern ice sheets. She uses a wide range of tools, including but not limited to GIS mapping, machine learning, sedimentology, geochronology and geochemistry in her exploration of Earth's icy history.

McKenzie has conducted fieldwork in remote polar locations including Alaska and Greenland. Her most recent trip was to Greenland, supporting a project exploring methane and geochemical changes in water column and sediment flux at the front of a tidewater glacier. Using water column samples and sediment core samples up to several meters long, she collected data along a transect within a southeastern fjord of the island.

She recognizes that not every student enters her classroom with the same background knowledge yet recognizes that unique lived experiences contribute to new opportunities for exploration in the classroom. She seeks to meet each student where they are and work to connect students with course material to improve their understanding of the physical world.
