Jesse Benn, PhD, currently teaches Mass 110: Mass Media Impact & History; Mass 144: Multimedia Storytelling; and Mass 441: Emerging Media.
Benn takes a student-centric approach, focusing on individual goals and learning styles. Most of his assignments and due dates are flexible, giving students the chance to practice self-management and motivation. Jesse sees his role as a guide and source of knowledge for students and offer a mix of learning opportunities/assignments.
Following the pedagogical tradition of Paulo Freire and bell hooks, he uses an “ungraded” approach in all of his classes. This means students self-reflect throughout the course and have requirements they have to meet to, but ultimately they choose their final grades (with some parameters). This is a research-based approach that promotes intrinsic motivation and improved learning experiences.
Benn grew up in Colorado and feels incredibly lucky for that. He spends his free time with his family and dog. They love to camp, travel, and play.
In addition to his experience with Revolution News and HuffPost Benn has been published in Alternet and featured on popular podcasts. He’s also had his photography and gear reviews published by Backpacker Magazine and in W.L. Gore’s promotional materials.
