Pixie Popplewell (they/fae), PhD, is the Director of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Colorado Mesa University and teaches various courses across the MSW curriculum. They earned a BA in Psychology and Human Services from William Penn University, an MSW from California State University, Sacramento and a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Southern California.
Before entering academia, Popplewell worked in hospice, behavioral health, youth and family services, LGBTQ+ housing programs and statewide youth homelessness research and policy initiatives. Their scholarly interests include lived expertise, critical systems analysis, participatory research, homelessness, information access and the integration of research, policy and practice to advance equity and improve community well-being.
Popplewell approaches education as a reciprocal process in which everyone has knowledge to contribute. They strive to make complex concepts accessible, encourage curiosity and critical thinking and engage students through feedback-informed teaching practices that promote reflection, collaboration and continuous growth.
Outside of work, they enjoy creating art, dancing and bowling. Across their teaching, research and practice, Popplewell strives to integrate their lived expertise, scholarship and professional experience to contribute to a future where everyone has access to the knowledge, opportunities and resources needed to thrive.
