Four Key Phases of DEPTH

Currently In Phase Two: Piloting & Refinement

This is a graphic that depicts the four key phases of DEPTH. Phase one is inception and co-design. Phase two is Pilot and Refinement. Phase three is Data Capture and analysis. Phase four is dissemination and impact.

Phase One: Inception & Co-Design

A 6-month inception and co-design phase enables DEPTH to map the existing evidence and stakeholders, co-create the project management and MEL frameworks, build data management systems with our partners, establish communication and reporting channels, and secure ethical approvals. This phase also features an extensive co-design process, which involves the collective development of research protocols and tools in close collaboration with the Community Advisory Board (CAB). This robust inception period ensures meaningful collaboration and integration of project partners and CAB. This foundation carries through each subsequent phase and each component of DEPTH. We hosted two inception workshops; first, at the Phoenix Office of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and then at Mission: Border Hope's Welcome Center (MBH).

Phase Two: Piloting & Refinement

This phase enables the survey enumerators hired at both the IRC and MBH to test the survey tools and protocols and assess the appropriateness of the tools, monitor data management, and respond to any changing circumstances. The pilot enumerators will take detailed notes on the deployment of research tools and processes, according to a predefined list of key questions formulated in Phase One. Preliminary processing, coding, and analysis will be conducted on both the quantitative and qualitative data. After the pilot has concluded, the project team will reconvene to conduct a thorough review of all pilot data and enumerator reflections, adapting research tools and protocols as needed.

Phase Three: Data Capture & Analysis

The next phase implementing the survey and interview instruments developed during the pilot phase. This includes a wide-scale survey of migrants alongside in-depth, semi-structured interviews with TIP survivors. This mixed-methods approach will deliver breadth, depth, and nuance.  Data from both methods will feed into different analyses—prevalence estimation, mixed methods analysis of TIP experiences and typologies, and geospatial mapping.

Phase Four: Dissemination & Impact

DEPTH will conclude with a dedicated dissemination and engagement phase, focused on accessible presentation of findings. The presentations will be co-developed with the CAB for key audiences through targeted outputs, translation of research into practical tools for policymakers and practitioners to improve TIP prevention and response efforts. Dissemination will target policy, academic, and practitioner audiences taking advantage of relevant fora to facilitate uptake. To ensure diversity and maximize reach, the team will engage various different avenues for dissemination, including: online and in-person events; academic and policy/practice/public facing publications; traditional news media and social media; integration in online platforms; and bespoke engagement with key stakeholders in developing interventions in response to project findings.
