Summer Camps at Montrose

Camps for middle and high schools are now available for registration.  Camps instructors are experienced teachers who work for Colorado Mesa University and the Montrose School District.

2018 Summer Camps

Assemble a skeleton, learn how to determine gender and height from just a bone, and measure the effects of exercise on respiratory and cardiovascular behavior.  These are just a few of the activities in this camp, which will cover the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and sensory systems of the human body.  This camp is ideal for students interested in careers in health professions.

Explore the art of photography and use the camp’s DLSR cameras and Adobe Photoshop software to create professional pictures.  Students will learn how to use a professional camera, compose a picture, and use Photoshop software to enhance their images.  Students exhibit their favorite images on the last day of the camp.

Learn to code computer programs to create your own animations and games. We use the programming language Scratch, developed by the MIT Media Lab, which is a fun way to learn strategies for solving problems, designing projects and communicating ideas. Walk away with the ability to create your own games and animations only limited to your imagination. No coding experience needed.

The Internet of Things is the growing network of smart devices, such as vehicles and home appliances, connected to the internet and controlled remotely. Students will learn how these devices work and will perform hands-on activities such as connecting security cameras to the internet.

Learn the fundamentals of computer hardware and software, mobile devices, and networks and discover what it is like to be an Information Technology professional.  Hands-on activities cover topics such as working with mobile devices, Linux operating systems, and client-side virtualization, Microsoft Windows operating systems, security, and networking.

Learn to tell powerful stories through video. In this camp, you will use a Canon DSLR camera, Rode microphone, and Final Cut Pro X editing software to produce a short, non-fiction film. We will explore pre-production, production, and post-production filmmaking techniques, including storyboarding, camera angles, framing, lighting, audio, and nonlinear editing. We will host an end-of-session film festival to highlight the films.

Aspiring screenwriters will learn about the role of mythology and the Hero’s Journey in popular movies such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. The camp introduces students to the principles of storytelling and using mythic structure in a screenplay. Students will outline and begin the first act of a feature film screenplay and workshop their writing on the final day of the camp.
