Summer Camps at Montrose

Camps for middle and high school students are now available for registration. Camps instructors are experienced teachers who work for Colorado Mesa University and the Montrose School District. For more information and to register online, click on the camp that interests you.

All CMU Montrose campers are required to complete the Liability and Media Release waivers.

2019 Summer Camps

Engineer the World!

Campers will engage in a little bit of everything STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Every day will include STEM challenges ranging from building egg drop devices to making origami creations that light up. Campers will also learn 3D printing by designing and generating a unique printable creation. Students can take their projects home and enjoy them.

Fun with Food Science

Campers will be able to explore foods in a fun and exciting class.  From fermentation to crystallization, campers will make edible creations and gain valuable culinary skills along the way. Hair ties (for shoulder length hair and longer) and close-toed shoes will be required.

Improvisational Drama and Spoken Word Poetry

Students will ignite their imaginations learning a live theatre skillset in which the plot, characters and story dialogue are made up in the moment. We will also create, rehearse, and perform one memorized piece of Spoken Word Poetry to share with family and friends once camp ends.

Multimedia Journalism & Movie Making

Campers will learn to develop news stories and movie ideas by creating storyboards, scripts, learning camera angles, shooting video footage, interviewing people, and using basic scene lighting. They will work with software to create a movie and edit it using special effects, sound effects, and audio dubbing. $25 equipment refundable deposit required.

Sewing 101

Campers will learn basic hand stitches and sewing on a machine.  Students will create a hand-stitched project and a machine-sewn project to take home and use.

Campers will use the Vex IQ robotics platform to plan, build, and customize robots to perform problem-solving exercises and competitive challenges. No robotics experience is necessary, and kits are provided for use during the camp. Advanced campers can use Modkit and RobotC programming languages to help robots work autonomously using sensors and commands. $50 refundable equipment damage deposit required.

Exploring Art Using Alcohol Ink & Acrylic Pour

Learn two creative art forms from an experienced artist. Campers will paint and blend with alcohol inks to create flowers, abstract designs, and landscape scenes. In addition, campers will learn how to do acrylic paint pouring on a canvas to create magical designs.

Introduction to Rock Art Field Archaeology

Learn about ancient rock art from an archaeologist who specializes in Ute culture. Dr. Patterson will demonstrate the techniques used to document and preserve rock art, and lead a field trip to the Shavano Valley rock art site. Campers will use digital cameras to document the rock art in the field, and then learn how to make replica drawings using computers in the classroom. All materials/equipment provided. Parents must drop off/pick up their camper at the Shavano Valley site on Tuesday.

Mathematics Camp

This two-week camp is for students who enjoy solving mathematical problems. Through a series of carefully chosen problems, campers will learn the connections between many areas of mathematics, including number theory, modular arithmetic, abstract algebra, and symmetric groups. The problems will be within the grasp of high school and advanced middle school students but still fun and challenging. The camp instructor, Dr. Andrew Stephens, teaches at the CMU Montrose campus.

Digital Photography

Apply your imagination through the art of digital photography.  Using the camp’s cameras, you will take a number of image of different subjects and learn a variety of photographic techniques and styles.  Then using the camp’s computers, you will digitally process your images and learn the tools to enhance them artistically.

Greek Gods and Heroes

Explore the mythology of Ancient Greece the way the Greeks did. We will use story-telling, and reading parts in scripts to learn about these classic stories. We will also engage in games and activities to answer the Riddle of the Sphinx, explore Hades and Olympus, and find the Golden Fleece.

Shakin' It Up with Shakespeare

Discover what is it about Shakespeare that keeps us coming back to his plays 400 years later. We will use script reading, assorted media, and activities to “tread the stage” with the Bard of Avon and explore how modern movies still love Shakespeare.

Anatomy and Physiology

Assemble a skeleton, learn how to determine gender and height from just a bone, and measure the effects of exercise on respiratory and cardiovascular behavior. These are just a few of the activities in this camp, which will cover the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and sensory systems of the human body. This camp is ideal for students interested in careers in health professions.

Becoming an EMT/Paramedic

Learn what it takes to be a first responder from the professionals. Campers will tour Fire and EMS stations, an emergency dispatch center, and more. Your camp teacher is a RN/EMT/Paramedic with 30 years of experience in critical care, medical transport helicopters and emergency room care. Guest speakers include mountain rescue professionals.

Choose Your Paths E-Learning

Students learn what their interests and passions for their career, hobby or lifestyle look like locally, globally and historically. Students reach out to local field experts with polished interview questions, and then create a PowerPoint presentation. Students are more engaged in academics when they have a vision for their future, and they work harder today if they see how it will help them personally tomorrow. With more knowledge, experiences, and a village of supporters, young people come out of high school with a clearer vision of what they want and don’t want, and how they’ll get to where they want to be.

Create Videos Like a Pro

In this introductory class, students will use Mac applications to create a short film using stock footage and Hollywood editing techniques. Students will learn how to promote their work on video sharing sites and how to live stream and build an audience. These are vital skills for the digital age, particularly for students considering a career in filmmaking. Requirements: Students need to have created a Google account or have an MCSD account.

Disease Detectives

When a disease outbreak occurs, such as salmonella or measles disease detectives go to work. Like crime scene investigators, disease detectives use clues to discover the cause of the outbreak and solve it. This camp will use case studies, role-playing, simulations and guest experts to solve different outbreaks. Campers will learn about the roles of lab workers, medical professionals, and health departments in stopping diseases and explore careers in these fields.

Introduction to Computer Programming

Learn how to code computer programs to create your own animations and games. Campers will learn the programming language Scratch, developed by the MIT Media Lab, which is a fun way to learn strategies for solving problems, designing projects and communicating ideas. Campers will be introduced to the programming languages Python and Linux and use Ozobot STEM education robots that allow two ways of coding, Color Codes and OzoBlockly. No coding experience needed.
