CMU Civic Forum: Terrorism, Israel and the Palestinians: Why is Peace so Elusive?

If we value Dignity, then we must condemn the recent acts of barbarism and terror committed by Hamas against innocent human beings. If we value Humility, then we have something to learn from the experience of others. If we value Love, Power and Curiosity, then we must fulfill our obligation as a university to convene difficult conversations.

It is for these reasons that we will host a timely CMU Civic Forum event: "Terrorism, Israel, and the Palestinians: Why is Peace so Elusive?" as we endeavor to educate ourselves and our community to understand the current crisis and face head-on genocidal ideologies. This event will feature the experience and expertise of the following panelists:

• Dr. Doug O'Roark, Professor of History
• Dr. Tim Casey, Professor of Political Science
• Dr. Holly Oberle, Assistant Professor of Political Science
• Dr. Dan Leshem, Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council

Join this important discussion to orient yourself to the issues surrounding the historical ties of the Jewish people and Palestinians to the lands of the Near East; the enduring consequences of the Holocaust; a closer examination of the geography of modern-day Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza; a more developed discussion of who precisely are the terror groups of Hamas and Hezbollah and the role of Iran in the region, and; the future prospects for peace.
