CMU Montrose Lecture Series presents
“Jurassic Park at Ouray: Uncovering a Sauropod Dinosaur Trackway,” with geologist Rick Trujillo
Local Rick Trujillo first noticed the dirt-filled holes in the 1950s, when he was a ten-year-old roaming the mountainsides above Ouray. Even then he knew they were dinosaur tracks. Over a half century later and with a career in geology, he resolved to document them: “…it occurred to me that I was probably the only living person who knew of the tracks…,” he recalls. What he and other specialists unearthed would turn out to be a Sauropod trackway from the late Jurassic Era (about 160 million years ago). A small brontosaurus or apatosaurus made the imprints in 134 steps, creating a “grapevine” trackway unique among such sites recorded around the world.
About Rick Trujillo
A member of the Ouray High School class of ’66, Rick Trujillo is a local legend. With a degree in Geology, he began his career in mine and minerals exploration at the Camp Bird Mine above Ouray and for decades worked across the West and in Central and South America. He continues to collaborate with specialized geologic colleagues on sites near Ouray. “The dinosaur tracks on West Gold Hill are only one of these personal curiosity phenomena.”
