Heatwaves and Human Health with Charles Geoffrion

← Back to event list

Event details

More people are hospitalized or die due to heat exposure than any other weather-related cause. The frequency, intensity and duration of heatwaves are expected to rise given trends in the warming global climate. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can result in long-term physical and mental health complications. These include heat exhaustion, heat stroke, anxiety and a worsening of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and asthma.

Mr. Charles Geoffrion presents on current threats to the health of humans and other species from rising temperatures, extreme weather disasters, intensified wildfires, flooding, loss of biodiversity, vector spread of infectious diseases and the proliferation of microplastics. Addressing the health impacts of heat requires awareness, effective public health strategies and community understanding.
