CMU President Tim Foster on United States Supreme Court Decision on DACA

Colorado Mesa University's mission prioritizes recognizing the potential in all people and the power of post-secondary education to improve one's life and community simultaneously. We don't see Dreamers through the prism of immigration politics, we see them through the prism of human potential. Today, the United States Supreme Court decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) increased that potential.

Our role in society demands meeting people where they are and allowing education to transform their lives. CMU's current students, including immigrants, will be the doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, engineers and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. All of our students are a vibrant part of the CMU community serving as club leaders, academic achievers and first-generation pioneers. We honor the contributions of Dreamers to campus life.

Our commitment to access and affordability remains steadfast. We provide pathways for all people who want to make the world a better place through education. When enrolling students, CMU assesses a student's desire to acquire new skills and knowledge, no matter their status, as a key criteria for becoming a Maverick. Dreamers are welcome at CMU.

I implore policy makers to develop convictions necessary for creating long-term solutions for Dreamers and their families. A permanent solution must acknowledge the humanity of all immigrants and the role they play in society. For many, the United States is the only place they have ever called home.

As a country founded for and by immigrants, we must work to create a future nation that celebrates contributions of immigrants. For today, Colorado Mesa University stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Maverick Dreamers as they celebrate.
