Records are made to be broken.
Colorado Mesa University alumna Lindsay Icenogle returned to the soccer field alongside current goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek in early November to be recognized for their success in both the past and the present. The moment brought together two generations of Mavericks whose careers are connected by one record.
Icenogle is known as one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in the school's 100-year history, thanks to her long-standing record of career shutouts, which stood for more than two decades until Wieczorek surpassed it this season. During the ceremony, both athletes were recognized for their accomplishments, highlighting the long-standing success of CMU’s women’s soccer program.
“It's pretty cool to have somebody who's had that record for a long time be able to be there and give me words of encouragement and just kind of pass the torch,” Wieczorek said.
Icenogle is the Mavericks' all-time leader in saves and wins. The alumna played in 74 matches in her career before graduating in 2004. The Albuquerque native finished her career with over 6,400 minutes in goal and 1.09 goals against average. She was inducted into the CMU Hall of Honor in 2018.
Icenogle has remained in Grand Junction since her time at CMU, building a life and career grounded in the same values she carried as a Maverick. She now serves as the girls' soccer coach at Grand Junction High School, where she works to pass those lessons on to the next generation. Her team attended the honor ceremony and joined her on the field. Several of the girls standing with her on the field are already exploring paths that could lead them to CMU, carrying forward the legacy she helped establish.
Since Icenogle’s time at CMU, the women’s soccer program has continued to grow, and Wiezorek’s achievement continues a tradition of excellence. The junior from Washington has already built an impressive list of accomplishments.
“I broke the career shutouts record and the single-season shutouts record. So that was a really big deal to me,” she said.
She credits the entire team for her records, saying it wouldn’t be possible without them.
“I've been pretty lucky with the backline, honestly. That's their record just as much as it is mine. I’m super thankful for them.”
Going forward, Wiezorek has her eye set on breaking the RMAC all-time career shutout record and is also focused on team-oriented goals.
“Obviously, the best thing we can do is win as a team. And if I'm doing that and being a team player and working for my team, and playing for something bigger than myself, the records certainly come with that,” she said.
A few of Wieczorek's accomplishments at CMU include:
- Two–time RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year (2024-25)
- Two-time First Team All-RMAC Selection (2024-25)
- CSC Academic All-American (2024)
- CMU Single-Season School Record Holder – Shutouts (15)
- CMU Career School Record Holder – Shutouts (35)
- CMU Career School Record Holder – Wins (46)
- Seven-time RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week
- One time in 2025
- Three times in 2024
- Three times in 2023
In every game, Wieczorek keeps her mindset simple, knowing that each match could shape the team’s success.
“You're not going to get those 90 minutes back. You don't need to look forward, you don't need to look backwards. Just be present in that moment.”
The Mavericks closed out an impressive season with a regular season RMAC title. They fell in the RMAC Championship and later competed in the regional tournament, where their run came to an end. The year still marked one of the strongest seasons in recent program history, strengthened by Wieczorek’s milestone accomplishments.
With her senior season ahead, fans can expect more record-setting performances from the standout goalkeeper.
