GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Colorado Mesa University announced the hiring of Rob Courtney as its new athletic director, marking a homecoming for the longtime Maverick who previously served in key roles at CMU.
Courtney, a Maverick at heart, departed CMU several years ago to gain broader athletic leadership experience at the University of Colorado. He believes that his decision to gain additional experience outside CMU helped prepare him for the current position as he returns to guide Maverick Athletics forward.
“My wife, Kelli, and I knew we were once again home as we landed in Grand Junction to begin meeting with former colleagues, community leaders, student-athletes and coaches during my interview,” said Courtney. “I am honored by the confidence that coaches, student-athletes and President Marshall have in me to serve as the next Athletic Director at my alma mater. CMU has a proud tradition of success on and off the field, and I look forward to working alongside our coaches, staff, student-athletes, and university community to continue building on that foundation. I cannot wait to get started.”
CMU President John Marshall expressed confidence in Courtney and complimented his decision to return to CMU.
"Rob Courtney exemplifies our university's values of humility and courage and exemplifies our culture — qualities that win championships," said CMU President John Marshall. “We are excited about Rob’s return and know he is the right person to advance CMU’s mission through the Division II student-athlete model that we believe in.”
The recruitment effort was led by CMU interim athletic director Robin Brown with input from campus stakeholders who shared a commitment to finding a strong and proven leader with a powerful vision for the future of CMU Athletics.
“I can't think of a better leader more suitable to lead this department into our next era of championships than Rob Courtney,” said Brown.
As Courtney met with coaches, many expressed admiration and respect for him, citing his familiarity with the programs and commitment to student-athletes. The hiring reaffirms the university's dedication to supporting the CMU student-first, student-athlete model.
“We will create a world-class experience for our student-athletes. One that develops a whole person and prepares them for life beyond sport,” said Courtney. “We will invest in and support our coaches and staff, ensuring they have the tools and resources to lead programs that make this university and community proud.”
Courtney emphasized that the strength of CMU Athletics extends beyond the field and into the larger Maverick community. Success will grow out of strong relationships with the people who support CMU every day, whether they’re cheering in the stands, supporting student-athletes or partnering with the university in the community.
“CMU Athletics belongs to this community, to our fans, alumni, faculty and community partners. Together, we'll build something special. At the end of the day, success in athletics, and in life, comes down to the people,” said Courtney.
