One of the key connective resources utilized by faculty and students is Desire2Learn (D2L) Brightspace. D2L serves as a hub for academic assignments, grade tracking, discussion portals, and more and this year, the platform is receiving an upgrade with the integration of YuJa Panorama. Panorama makes it easier for instructors to create inclusive and flexible content for all students. This new tool supports Colorado Mesa University’s commitment to universal design and digital accessibility and helps faculty adhere to current federal and state laws and regulations. Panorama will be enabled in every D2L course starting Monday, September 29.
“At CMU, we understand that technology and accessibility standards continue to change and evolve,” said Director of Digital Learning and Innovation Jennifer Pacheco. “We’re committed to making continual progress. As part of this, one of our digital accessibility goals is that all content posted to D2L is accessible, or that an accessible alternative is provided.”
The most immediate benefit of Panorama is that students gain access to alternative formats of uploaded course files. This allows learners to interact with content in the format that best suits their learning preferences or needs. For example, Panorama can automatically generate tagged PDFs, audio (MP3) files, ePub files, and enhanced HTML files. Students can download the format they prefer, whether they want to listen on the go or use a screen reader-friendly version.
For instructors, Panorama provides real-time accessibility feedback directly within D2L. When uploading documents or creating content, instructors will see color-coded accessibility indicators next to their files — green for accessible, and red or orange when issues are detected. Clicking the indicators reveals guidance and suggestions to help faculty improve the accessibility of their materials before they are made available to students.
The Center for Digital Learning and Innovation (CDLI) is available to support faculty in making these improvements. In partnership with the Outdoor Program, Parking Services and The Maverick Store, CDLI is offering incentives to encourage adoption and improvement. Faculty members who make substantial accessibility improvements to their courses during the first two weeks of October will be entered to win prizes, including a parking permit (valid through next summer) and credit for outdoor gear rental.
“Perfection isn’t the goal, progress is,” Pacheco said. “Together, we’re making strides toward a more inclusive CMU.”
