CMU’s summer music camps help young musicians grow, play and connect
Colorado Mesa University hosted multiple summer music camps this summer. From elementary to high school, the music department offered three different camps: General Music, Band and Orchestra and Jazz.
Since 2006, CMU’s music department has strived to reach two goals. The first is to raise the artistic level of the community, and second, inspire future music educators, leaders and advocates. Younger campers explored more entry level instruments and learned the basics of multiple instruments. Middle school aged students chose a primary instrument to focus on. Jazztopia was for students looking to embark further into the jazz world by exploring improvisation, history and instrument techniques.
Darin Kamstra, PhD, Head of the Music Department and Director of Jazz Studies and Percussion, reflected on the experience.
“Students take away tools to continue to improve their musical abilities, and to ultimately improve the performing skills of the ensembles at their schools,” said Kamstra.
