CMU Rodeo week kicks off with Steer Stroll and BBQ at the Maverick Meat Up
Colorado Mesa University is saddling up for a week full of western spirit as it prepares to host the annual Northwestern Mutual Maverick Stampede Rodeo, presented by CoorsTek, at the Mesa County Fairgrounds on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12.
Before the crowds take to the arena, the celebration starts on campus with the Rodeo Roundup on Thursday, April 10 at 5pm in the University Center Plaza. Presented by American Ag Credit and DW Metal Works, the Roundup is a free community event featuring the Maverick Meat Up, where President John Marshall will be behind the smoker serving up his famous BBQ in a friendly competition— free until it runs out.
In a fun and spirited tribute to CMU’s western roots, livestock will make their way through campus for the Steer Stroll tradition, transforming the heart of campus into a living homage to the heritage of western Colorado. The rodeo tradition at CMU runs deep, honoring the grit, resilience and connection to the land that define life in this part of the country. Events like the Maverick Stampede not only showcase the talents of collegiate rodeo athletes but also strengthen the cultural ties that make western Colorado such a special place to live.
The competitive rodeo action begins Friday evening at 6pm with the first performance and barrel racing slack to follow. Saturday’s events begin at 9am with timed event slack and a Royalty Clinic hosted by Miss Rodeo Colorado, Sierra Southerland. The championship round takes place Saturday evening at 6pm, followed by a concert with Chris Petersen at 8pm.

- Children under 10: Free
- VIP Tickets: $70 (includes arena-side seating, food and cash bar)
