CMU pitcher Andrew Pogue signs undrafted free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers, becoming the latest Maverick to make the leap to Major League Baseball.
Colorado Mesa University added another Major League Baseball (MLB) player to its list. Andrew Pogue, a right-handed pitcher, was signed by the Detroit Tigers as an undrafted free agent.
Pogue pitched 34 innings with the Mavericks and allowed just 28 hits, 18 walks and collected 35 strikeouts. From Peoria, Illinois, Pogue began his journey at CMU this last season as a transfer from the University of Illinois. Pogue showcased four different pitches; however, his biggest strengths were an upper-90s fastball and a low-90s slider.
Pogue can hold a piece of home in the Major’s, as he joins former CMU Maverick, Bligh Madris, in the Tigers organization.
“It’s a special moment seeing Andrew sign with the Detroit Tigers,” Madris said. “The coaching staff and school instills a work ethic and competitiveness that translates to the next level, and Andrew is a great example of that.”
Pogue was a stand-out athlete on the field, but his achievements in the classroom were just as prevalent. CMU’s Davis School of Business is proud to support student-athletes across the world. Pogue was a Ronald V. Davis Legacy Scholar who was awarded for demonstrating excellence in the classroom and on the field. Founded by CMU Trustee, Ron Davis, this scholarship invests in emerging leaders, ensuring they receive academic support and mentorship, preparing them to make a meaningful impact on the future of business. The Ronald V. Davis Legacy Scholarship recognizes Pogue for maintaining a 3.5 GPA, and for his character, discipline and drive to lead.
"Seeing Andrew, a Ronald V. Davis Legacy Scholar, sign with the Detroit Tigers is an incredible achievement. Andrew displays the power of discipline, education and heart. This young man represents the very best of what it means to be a Maverick: focused, resilient and ready to lead both on and off the field. I couldn’t be prouder," said Ron Davis, CMU Trustee and Founder of the Ronald V. Davis Legacy Scholarship.
Pogue is looking forward to beginning his pro career, as his journey was highlighted in Grand Junction, CO. Looking back on his career, he celebrated his time at CMU and the winning culture of the Mavericks.
“Colorado Mesa University baseball coaches, campus and culture allowed me to harness my focus into my passion,” Pogue said. “It’s where winners go to win. Coach Hanks is a once-in-a-generation coach teaching players who want to learn the game.”
Head Baseball Coach Chris Hanks believed Pogue is a great portrayal of CMU and Maverick baseball.
“Andrew worked incredibly hard and overcame a ton of adversity to achieve this accomplishment,” Hanks commented. “He was a great representative of our baseball program and of the CMU spirit.”
The Mavericks baseball team had another successful season claiming their 13th-straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) title. Coming up short of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, the Mavericks look to fill the spots of those who left to make another run next year.
Andrew Pogue looks to take his leadership, spirit and talent to the next level in Detroit. The Illinois native will only grow as an athlete and leader, continuing to decorate his resume as a CMU alumnus.
