Persistence Pays Off For Recent CMU Graduate Sarah Stevens

The 2025 graduate’s journey to earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice was shaped by resilience, determination and campus support

“Never give up.” Those words tattooed on Sarah Stevens’ back have guided her through 15 years of challenges on her path to graduating from Colorado Mesa University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice this past Friday.

As a first-generation college student and former foster youth, Stevens spent years navigating obstacles while pursuing her education. She enrolled at then–Mesa State College in 2009 following her graduation from Palisade High School. Soon after enrolling, life’s demands pulled her in different directions.

“Life took me away, but I knew I wanted a degree in something I was passionate about,” she said. “I wanted to be successful, not because of where I came from, but because of where I was going.”

That determination never left her mind. In 2019, Stevens re-enrolled at CMU, balancing full-time work with a demanding course load. After completing several semesters, she encountered another challenge when her mother’s health began to decline. Stevens spent her days working and attending classes, then drove each evening to her mother’s home to help manage her medical care, all while staying on top of her coursework.

“There were many days I wanted to give up on school, but I never did. And now I’m here,” said Stevens. “No matter how hard life gets, you can still achieve your goals if you stay committed.”

Throughout her journey, Stevens leaned on a strong support system at CMU. She credits TRIO Student Support Services, along with her professors and advisors, with helping her persevere during some of her most difficult moments.

“Finding someone to connect with and trusting that support is huge. TRIO was there for anything I needed. Workshops, tutoring, even just listening when I needed someone to hear me out,” said Stevens.

During moments when the pressure felt overwhelming, encouragement from faculty and staff often made the difference between pushing forward and giving up.

“There were days I didn’t think I could do it anymore, and someone at CMU would tell me, ‘You can, Sarah.’ And they were right,” said Stevens. “Even on your darkest day, one email can be a lifeline that reminds you, ‘Okay, I can do this.’”

Five years after re-enrolling, she crossed the finish line, ready to start her career. Stevens is now exploring opportunities in probation, juvenile justice and forensic investigation. While her ultimate career path is still unfolding, she’s eager to make a meaningful impact in the community.

She also has a message for students who may be struggling to stay motivated in their own college journeys.

“It doesn’t matter when it’s done; it matters that it’s done. You just can’t give up,” said Stevens.

Stevens’ journey reflects the meaning behind the words she carries with her every day. Through her own perseverance and by seeking support when she needed it, she proved that giving up was never an option. Her graduation stands as a powerful reminder that resilience can carry anyone through even the most challenging paths.
