CMU Triathlon Continues National Championship Tradition

Colorado Mesa University’s triathlon team capped off another strong season with a competitive showing at the national championship. The program’s continued consistency reflects a culture built on experience, development and sustained success.

In November, Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) Triathlon team aimed to reach another national championship finish in Tempe, Arizona. The team’s 7-woman lineup included Alexandra Schipai, Shantelle Tupaz, Nadine Klive, Josie Williams, Mackenzie Mayer, Fiona Graves and Sylvie Aardema Gagnon. Jaycee Stephens traveled with the team as an alternate.

Led by Head Coach Jen Mathe, who has been with the team for four years, the Mavs concluded some electric last few years with a fourth-place team finish last season. Four of the seven athletes returned to this year's race with hopes to finish higher than they have in the past.

The Mavericks have had 11 different women earn 20 combined All-American honors since founding their program in 2017. This year, Tupaz and Klive earned All-American honors. Tupaz finished 17th amongst Division II athletes with an overall time of 1:10:38.1 seconds. The native of Pleasanton, California, looks to improve further next year as she is only a sophomore. Klive, a senior from Harsefeld, Germany, finished 20th with a time of 1:11:08.6.

The College Triathlon Coaches Association (CTCA) recognized 21 triathletes in each of the three NCAA divisions that competed in the 2025 season’s final race. Tupaz’s All-American honor is the first in her career; however, Klive caps off her collegiate career as a 3-time All-American. The Mavericks Triathlon team has now placed fourth or higher in Division II at each of the last seven national championships, dating back to their second year as a program in 2018.
