CMU celebrates 1,478 graduates receiving 1,668 degrees and certificates on May 17
As Colorado Mesa University prepares to celebrate 1,478 graduates receiving 1,668 degrees and certificates, the university welcomes back one of its own. CMU is proud to announce that Ben Steele, tight ends coach for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, will deliver the keynote address at the 2025 Commencement Ceremony on May 17.
A proud graduate of both Palisade High School and Colorado Mesa University, Steele’s journey from western Colorado to the NFL reflects the courageous spirit of this year’s graduating class.
Now in his 17th season coaching and 12th in the NFL, Steele joined the Cardinals in 2023 after serving as the Denver Broncos’ assistant offensive line coach His coaching career also includes roles with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well as positions with the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings. Before beginning his NFL career, Steele played for former CMU Head Football Coach Joe Ramono and was part of a state championship-winning team at Palisade High School.
Among this year’s graduates, nearly half are from western Colorado and hundreds are first-generation college students—a reflection of CMU’s focus on serving its region and expanding access for those forging new paths for themselves and their families. In addition to traditional baccalaureate and master’s degrees, CMU and CMU Tech will also award hundreds of associate degrees, certificates and credentials that help fuel the region’s skilled trades workforce and economy.
As CMU celebrates academic achievement across its campuses, Steele’s presence will serve as a reminder to graduates of the importance of higher education. Whether pursuing careers, contributing to their communities or continuing their studies, the Class of 2025 enters the world with the same values Steele embodies: resilience, courage and a drive to serve something bigger than themselves.
