CMU music department presents 8th annual Jazztopia

Jazztopia music camp features guest trumpet player Ingrid Jensen

Colorado Mesa University’s music department is offering its 8th annual Jazztopia music camp June 13-16 for area students. Jazztopia is a day camp that offers the opportunity for high-school musicians to explore and develop their jazz skills in a combo setting. Activities focus on improvisation, jazz history, instrument technique and combo performance. Students who are currently in high school or about to enter high school are eligible to attend, with advanced students completing 7th grade eligible for consideration with director recommendation. No prior experience with improvisation or in a jazz combo is necessary.

“Jazztopia provides an outlet for creative youth interested in improving their jazz performance skills,” said CMU Department of Music Head Darin Kamstra, DMA. “The workshop attracts students from around the west slope who prepare a public performance at the end of the workshop and take valuable skills back to their respective school music programs.”

Guest artist and trumpet player Ingrid Jensen will join the Jazztopia faculty, teaching master classes and performing a concert with the Western Colorado Jazz Orchestra and members of the Jazztopia faculty on Wednesday, June 15 at 7:30pm in the Moss Performing Arts Center Robinson Theatre.

Jensen has been hailed as one of the most gifted trumpeters of her generation, having graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1989 and recording three highly acclaimed CDs for the ENJA record label. Jensen is one of the most in-demand trumpet players on the global jazz scene. Learn more about Ingrid Jensen at her website.

Additional Jazztopia faculty include Joe Anderies, saxophone, Sean Flanigan, brass, Tim Fox, piano, Tim Emmons, bass, and Darin Kamstra, drums.

Students participating in the workshop will perform a free final concert on Thursday, June 16 at 3:30pm in the Robinson Theatre.

Students interested in registering for Jazztopia can visit the website.

Tickets for the Ingrid Jensen concert on Wednesday, June 15 are available on the website. Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for students.
