Two-time Olympian to coach students on building a championship culture

Grand Junction –Coach Sherry Winn will address CMU students on Wednesday, October 24 at 7pm in the University Center ballroom. Winn is a two-time Olympic athlete and will speak about the life skills necessary to build a championship culture and a winning, business mentality. Winn will share her experiences in identifying values, nurturing key relationships and empowering individuals through responsibility. She will impart important advice to students as they navigate the complexities of sports and academia.

"Anyone who knows sports knows Sherry was a great coach," said CMU Co-Athletic Director Kris Mort. "We know she will inspire CMU students and coaches using the same ideas and messages that inspired her own players. Sherry has had success and will no doubt impart that success on future leaders here at CMU.”

Winn has written numerous books and built a career around the idea of taking responsibility and controlling one’s thoughts. In her books, Winn discusses how the nature of thoughts impact life and outcomes whether on the court or in a professional capacity.

“Coach Winn is the second Olympian we’ve had interact with students this month at CMU,” said CMU President Tim Foster. “Olympians achieve the pinnacle of performance in athletics, but sometimes we forget their mental toughness is what allows for such success. We want to instill mental toughness in our students, so they can succeed on and off the field.”

The CMU business department is partnering with the Athletics Department to bring Winn to campus because they believe business students can benefit from the same critical skills that athletes use on the field.

“Values, relationships, empowerment, responsibility and effort — these are the themes that Coach Winn speaks about to inspire athletes. It just so happens the same factors create student success in business,” said Business Department Head Steve Norman, PhD. “We’re happy to have Sherry make us better using her own life experience and business success.”

Media interested in joining students for the presentation are encouraged to inquire for additional details.
