Generous gift prompts new name for WCCC lab

The welding lab at Western Colorado Community College has a new name thanks to a generous gift from the Sturm Family Foundation for scholarships and much needed equipment.

The lab in the Youngblood Building on the Bishop Campus was christened the Sturm Family Manufacturing Center at a naming ceremony on April 30.

The Sturm Family Foundation gift provides scholarships to students in WCCC’s Electric Lineworker and Construction–Electrical programs as well as much needed equipment for the Welding Technology and Machining/Manufacturing Technology programs.

The Sturm Family Foundation is committed to supporting nonprofit entities that provide valuable services and programs to their local community that make significant impacts, said Emily Sturm of the Sturm Family Foundation.

“We are particularly interested in helping with workforce development and higher education so we were delighted to be able to support the technical education provided at WCCC,” she said when the gift was made.

In addition to the scholarships, the Sturm family gift paid for MIG and TIG welding equipment, lathes and mills for machining and the upgrade of the electrical service in the Construction-Electrical lab.

The equipment that was replaced will be used in the machining and welding classes delivered at the Montrose campus.
