Dear Colorado Mesa University Community:

As you know, President Foster announced yesterday his intention to retire at the end of this academic/fiscal year. His leadership has propelled CMU boldly forward and positioned this institution for an incredible future. Even amid a pandemic, his steadfast management and commitment to serving students and the people of Colorado continues to make CMU stand out among institutions across the state. He is a leader with great vision who also possesses the rare quality of relentless attention to detail needed to execute on the vision. He leaves behind a great legacy and very large shoes to fill.

To that point, the Trustee’s take few responsibilities more seriously than our duty to select and appoint the President. We recognize that this announcement may increase some anxieties, and we want the campus community to know we are committed to finding the very best candidate to become the next president to lead the university.

The Board of Trustees rarely gets the opportunity to engage directly with the campus community — and our traditional opportunities during Welcome Week events, Commencement, etc. have largely been interrupted by COVID-19. We welcome this opportunity to engage with faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community, and are committed to a transparent process while also maintaining the strictest confidentiality that ensures the most qualified candidates are attracted and retained during the search process.

In the coming days, we will share additional details with you as we finalize the search framework, process and timeline. We are confident we can complete this task by mid-May. A Presidential Search website will be launched and will serve as the central point for communications and details as we move forward.

As you start the spring semester, we thank you for your continued service to CMU and its students. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Ray Anilionis, Chair

Colorado Mesa University Board of Trustees
