CMU rodeo hosts sixth annual collegiate contest

The Colorado Mesa University rodeo team will host the sixth annual Rocky Mountain Regional Intercollegiate Maverick Stampede Rodeo on April 13-14 at the Mesa County Fairgrounds at Veterans Memorial Park.

Eleven National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association-sanctioned teams will compete during the event with approximately 140 individual riders.

CMU will kick off the rodeo on Thursday, April 12, at 11:45am, with the sixth annual Steer Stroll. About 20 head of cattle will be driven across campus by rodeo team members. The Steer Stroll will start at the south end of campus.

The rodeo starts at 7pm on Friday night and 4pm on Saturday. Events include bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping and goat tying. Finals on Saturday pit the top 10 qualified contestants from each event against each other.

New this year is the Rocky Mountain Region Champions Awards Banquet at 8pm Saturday, April 14, in the Meyer Ballroom in the University Center. The regional award winners will be announced at the banquet. CMU’s Maverick Stampede is the last chance contestants have to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, in June. Tickets are $20 and there will be a silent auction.

Rodeo tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for students, seniors 60 and older, active military and veterans. Children ages five and under get in free. Tickets may be purchased at the gate or online at
