Colorado Mesa hosts inaugural convocation ceremony

Colorado Mesa University held its inaugural convocation ceremony on August 19. Convocation is the official start and celebration of the new academic year. It was also an opportunity for incoming students and their families to meet the CMU campus community including, other students, faculty, staff and the leadership team.

The event kicked off with a welcome by President Tim Foster followed by the meaning of convocation presented by Vice President for Academic Affairs Cynthia Pemberton, EdD. Associated Student Government President Ben Linzey also addressed the crowd of about 1,000 students, families, faculty and staff.

The celebration was lively and included a musical performance by Mesa Outloud!. Director of Musical Theatre Jeremy Franklin and Mesa Outloud!, backed by the Rowdy Brass Band, led the effort to teach the crowd the CMU Fight Song. The recessional march was led by the costumed mascot Rowdy and the live bovine Rowdy to a campus BBQ at the Plaza.

Just as commencement is a ceremony signifying the completion of study, convocation is a new tradition for CMU that symbolically launches a student's higher education journey and welcomes students to their new home at CMU.
