Changes coming to CMU athletics

Colorado Mesa University announced today that Athletic Director Tom Spicer is leaving the university. Spicer and CMU President Tim Foster said they have philosophical differences in their visions for the future of the athletic program at CMU.

“I want to thank Tom for all that he has brought to CMU. We appreciate his efforts and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Foster said. “We are a vibrant and growing university and part of that requires that we consistently evaluate and reevaluate the paths we take into the future.”

Spicer said that he is both grateful for his time at CMU and proud of all that has been accomplished since he joined the university in 2013.

“We took seven RMAC championships this season and I am very proud of our coaches and all of the staff in the athletic department. That is a significant accomplishment in anyone’s book,” Spicer said. “I appreciate them and I want to thank them and everyone in this community; our boosters and fans, everyone.”

Spicer came to CMU from Colorado School of Mines where he oversaw the athletic program for nine years. He served as the athletic director at Fort Hays State University for 15 years.

Foster said the university will make an announcement about new leadership in the athletic department soon.
