Steven Murray: a champion for all

From presenting his publications in Greece to competing in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, Colorado Mesa University’s Steven Murray, DA, believes you should approach tasks with the mindset of “either do it well or not at all.” This credence is visible in almost every aspect of his life.

As a professor of kinesiology, he teaches 1,000 to 1,500 students each academic year. Murray's courses are self-paced and he said he challenges his students to strive for excellence.

“Life is an open book," Murray said. "Go find the answer!”

Murray is an idea champion. He said he actively supports others in achieving their goals, whether working alongside faculty researching and publishing papers or encouraging students and helping them apply to graduate school. Murray is also a bridge builder. He works with faculty from different academic disciplines on publications. Currently, he is working on a publication about outdoor recreation constraints in Mesa County with CMU’s Assistant Professor of Business Nathan Perry, PhD, and Professor of Political Science Tim Casey, PhD.

His publications are among the top one percent in the world as far as views and downloads on academia.edu. His works are often published in national and global journals along with professors from Ivy league and top medical schools as well as doctors from the Mayo Clinic.

Murray has a diverse background that many may not know about. As a college student, he was a sponsored triathlete by both Nike and Litespeed Titanium Bicycles. He also has corporate experience as the lead wellness advisor for Nissan Motor Corporation.

Murray is one of many CMU teachers who strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. As Murray said, “My philosophy is, just do an outstanding job. If I am going to do anything, I am going to do a great job.”
