Four CMU music faculty were represented at the 2016 annual National Conference of the College Music Society (CMS) last October. Three faculty members - Jun Watabe, sax; Kristen Yun, cello; and Arthur Houle, piano - performed the premiere of the trio version of Houle's composition, Interplay for Sax, Cello and Piano, on a CMS Composer Showcase program. The music to Interplay is newly published by the Denver-based Abundant Silence. The performance was recorded and is posted on YouTube:

Yun and Houle also performed a cello/piano work by Chen Yi, a renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning contemporary Chinese composer, for a CMS Performer Showcase program.

Additionally, Watabe, Yun, and Houle attended a day-long conference workshop entitled, "The End of the Conservatory," an eye-opening and highly relevant forum on the need to bring music education into the 21st century by bolstering creativity, improvisation and entrepreneurship. Their music colleague, Sean Flanigan, also attended related CMS forums and together they subsequently shared the helpful insights gleaned from this important national conference with the entire CMU music faculty.
