James and the Giant Peach will feature puppets, animation and technical tricks to create the magic of Roald Dahl's world.

James and the Giant Peach opens theatre season

CMU’s Department of Theatre Arts will open its 2016-17 season with Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach,” September 29-October 8 in the Moss Performing Arts Center Robinson Theatre. The musical will be directed by Jeremy Franklin and will feature animation by Michael Legate and choreography by Gabriele Cahill.

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that results in a tremendous peach, inside which James meets human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities. When the peach, with James and the insects inside, rolls into the ocean, James must use his quick wit and creative thinking to help the residents learn to live and work together. Theatre-goers of all ages will enjoy this delightfully offbeat musical adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl adventure.

The public is also invited to a free discussion and presentation about the Dahl book at Tomlinson Library on Wednesday, October 5 at 7pm in the first floor event space. The discussion will include light refreshments and is part of a partnership between Tomlinson Library and the Department of Theatre Arts this year. Three of the four Main Stage productions this season are based on well-known literature and theatre-goers are encouraged to enhance their experience by reading before (or after!) they attend performances. The library is also creating educational displays in their main lobby to coincide with each show along with providing a recommended bibliography for further exploration of topics, themes and authors.

Tickets for James and the Giant Peach are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors, faculty/staff and $7 for students and are available online at or by calling the box office at 970.248.1604.

Rush prices for students, faculty and staff will apply for the shows presented on Thursday, September 29 and Thursday, October 6. Present a current MAVcard at the box office window the day of the show (10am-2pm) or one hour before the show (6:30-7:30pm) for one ticket at only $5. Seating is reserved so patrons should come to the box office with those they wish to sit with.
