Back in action

A s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play looms, Colorado Mesa University athletics are back in a big way.

CMU’s men’s soccer team and the Montana State – Billings Yellowjackets played to a 1-1 tie in the closing game of the Rimrock Classic on Sept. 14. The Mavs are now 2-1-1 on the season. Women’s soccer closed the non-conference portion of their schedule on Sept. 13 with a 4-1 loss to the Angelo State University Rambelles. The team is 0-3-1 overall. Both teams open RMAC play at Walker Field on Sept. 19.

CMU football held Texas A&M-Kingsville to just 294 yards of total offense, but the Mavericks fell to the Javelinas 17-14 on Sept. 13. Colorado Mesa (1-1) will open RMAC play on Sept. 20, playing Adams State University.

The volleyball team defeated its third top-10 team in two weeks on Sept. 13 with a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Southwest Minnesota State University. The Mavericks are 6-2 overall and open RMAC play in Brownson Arena, starting Sept. 18.

The men’s cross country team finished second and the women’s team third at the Mountaineer Open, hosted by Western State Colorado University on Sept. 13. CMU enjoys a week off before competing at the University of Colorado Invite on Sept. 27.

In RMAC preseason golf polls, CMU women were picked to finish second behind 2013 RMAC Champion CSU-Pueblo. The Mavericks open their season up on Sept. 15 in Denver. The men’s team, picked sixth in the polls, opens their season the same day in Amarillo, Texas.

The CMU men’s and women’s tennis teams closed out the weekend with losses to The University of Nebraska – Kearney and wins over The University of Texas of the Permian Basin on Sept. 13. Both teams will compete at Metropolitan State University on the weekend of Sept. 20–21.

The Colorado Mesa University cycling team collected 16 top-10 finishes at the Oredigger Mountain Bike Challenge on Sept. 6–7. The team competed the following weekend at the Pagan Pedal hosted by Western State Colorado University in Crested Butte. Results were not available at the time of publication.
