Online Scholarship Competition
Application Submission Deadline: Monday, February 27, 2023
• Up to seven scholarship awards of $2,000 are available.
• Grand Prizes of $2,000 each (stackable with other scholarships) will be awarded for the winner's first year of music study at CMU.
Eligibility to Enter
• High School Juniors and Seniors as well as non-traditional prospective students.
• Intend to study music at Colorado Mesa University.
• Scholarship applied to the winner's first academic year at CMU.
• Previous winners of this competition are ineligible to enter.
A. Video Recording Instructions
- Record your video with good natural acoustics. Dress professionally, as you would for a recital or live audition.
- Record in horizontal/landscape orientation, not vertical/portrait, and record from a fixed camera position. Face straight-forward toward the camera as you would appear to adjudicators in a live audition.
- Your video recordings must clearly show all of your face and include your entire body as well as accompanist and instrument if applicable.
- Introduce each selection at the beginning of the video. Introduce yourself by saying:
(first and last name)
I will perform(title of the composition)
by(composer)
- The video and audio must not be digitally altered.
- Your video recordings should have been recorded after July 1, 2022.
B. Uploading Video Auditions to YouTube
- Only UNLISTED YouTube are allowed; no other platforms are accepted.
- VIDEO TITLE should contain the performer’s name and the name of the school, e., Jane Doe – Central Colorado High School.
C. Invalid Videos
Videos with the following errors will be considered invalid and may result in the disqualification:
- Videos with “private” sharing options
- Videos edited mid-performance or digitally altered in any way, including by recording equipment that alters the acoustics of the venue or sound quality by adding/subtracting reverb or altering the pitches being performed.
- Videos recorded before July 1, 2022.
Categories and Requirements
Submit a video of two (2) contrasting songs in Classical, Music Theatre, Folk, Church, or Commercial styles. All songs should have accompaniment - either live or recorded tracks are acceptable. |
Submit a video of solo performance at least 3 minutes in length. Live (non-digital) accompaniment is encouraged for solo pieces with piano. |
Submit a video of 2 contrasting piano pieces of solo performance at least 3 minutes in length (each). One piece should be a traditional classical piece, and the second piece could be in classical, jazz, country, latin, rock, funk, or any popular music genre. |
Submit an unlisted YouTube video link of solo performance at least 5 minutes in length. Live accompaniment (non-digital accompaniment) is encouraged. Etudes are usually not appropriate unless the particular etude is commonly accepted as a concert piece. |
Submit a video (via unlisted YouTube link) of solo performance at least 3 minutes in length. A composition performed with accompaniment is preferred, but unaccompanied compositions are also acceptable. Accompanied solo composition performed without the required accompaniment is NOT accepted. Live accompaniment (non-digital accompaniment) is encouraged, however, use of a digital-accompaniment (ie. Smart Music, backing track, etc.) is acceptable if/when live accompanist is unavailable. Etudes are usually not appropriate unless the particular etude is commonly accepted as a concert piece. |
Submit a video or videos at least 3 minutes in length demonstrating your percussion skills on at least two different percussion instruments (snare drum, timpani, mallets, drum set). If you are interested in auditioning only on drum set, please see the Jazz/Commercial category. |
Submit a video at least 3 minutes in length demonstrating your jazz or commercial (rock/pop/etc.) talents on woodwinds, brass, keyboard, electric guitar, electric bass, or drumset. Performing with a rhythm section or backing track is strongly encouraged to demonstrate your ensemble musicianship. Demonstrating improvisation skills is also strongly encouraged. |
