Colorado Mesa University Master Brand
Full-color University Vertical Signature
Download Full-color University Vertical Signature (.zip)
Purpose
The Colorado Mesa University master brand signature is the primary and the most commonly used mark of the CMU visual identity. The master brand signature is made up of two components: the Colorado Mesa University logo and wordmark. When communicating with the Colorado Mesa University master brand, the signature or wordmark must be utilized.
The logo is a stylized representation of the mesas and rivers in our region that communicates the dynamic and aspirational nature of the University. It also demonstrates our commitment to the region with outstanding faculty, quality academic programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and technology. The logo also reflects the attitude—individualistic and independent—of the school and its students.
The wordmark contains the University’s name. It features the words “Colorado Mesa”—set in Trajan—with an accentuated descending serif on the R. This element symbolizes the individualistic and “maverick” nature of the school by breaking out of the baseline. The word “University”—set in Avenir all caps—serves as the foundation of the mark. It is a classic and sophisticated visual representation of the institution that boldly proclaims the University’s name while resting it on a new foundation.
Usage and Restrictions
The approved visual signatures available are the vertical signature (seen above), the horizontal signature, and the wordmark (below).

Full-color University Wordmark
Download Full-color University Wordmark (.zip)
The vertical and horizontal signatures are registered trademarks of Colorado Mesa University. A registered trademark symbol occurs placed in the logo just left of the lowest point of the stylized mesa graphic. Likewise, the CMU wordmark is a trademark for the school, and the trademark symbol must appear below the "A" in Mesa. Because the signatures and the wordmark are trademark material for CMU, permission to use the mark must be obtained through the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) portal or directly from the CMU Marketing and Communications Office.
Do not alter the relative proportion of the logo and wordmark in any way. As the Colorado Mesa University brand is established, the wordmark promotes more name recognition in a way the logo cannot; therefore, the logo is not to stand alone without the wordmark. In other words, do not use the mesa and river graphic alone, the wordmark must accompany it.
The full signature (and wordmark when used alone) must be positioned in such a way that allows a distance equal to the height of the "M" in "Mesa" of clear-space between the mark and the nearest graphic element or edge of the design area.
No alterations to the original Colorado Mesa University signature and wordmark are allowed. The only exceptions are for an approved brand and academic extensions detailed later in this resource.
Do not combine the signature or wordmark with a brand extension signature, the University seal, or any Maverick Athletic or WCCC sub-brand mark. Also, do not attach any other element to the signature or wordmark.
The signature or wordmark must appear on all official Colorado Mesa University communications.
Color Usage
In the full-color version of the signatures and wordmark, the mesa graphic and the word "University" present the mavroon color, and black is used to fill the river element and the words "Colorado Mesa." This color combination cannot be changed or altered. Different variations of colors should never be used.
The signatures and wordmark can be reproduced in one-color using mavroon, black, white and yellow.

Full-color University Acronym

Purpose
The CMU acronym is designed to address the need for legibility when encountering space, distance, and material restrictions or when reproduction restrictions because of certain materials.
Usage & Restrictions
The CMU acronym provides a very visible presence for apparel and promotional items. Due to the recent introduction of the CMU brand and relatively minimal recognition in the marketplace, it is not appropriate to identify the university with the acronym alone.
Intended use of CMU acronym is mainly for internal communications, but can also be used on particular pre-approved merchandise. Consider the use of the master brand signature first, but when the acronym is needed, the wordmark or the name of the school must be present with the acronym.
Color Usages
In the full-color version of the acronym, the letters C, M, and U fill with black surrounded by a stroke of mavroon. This color combination cannot be changed or altered. Do not use different variations of colors.
The CMU acronym can be reproduced in one-color using mavroon, black, white, and yellow.

Full-color University Seal
Purpose
The Colorado Mesa University seal features an illustration that includes Independence Monument, Mount Garfield, and the Grand Mesa, which have been part of the institutional iconography since our founding in 1925. The seal displays an academic torch, which historically represents both learning and knowledge. Positioned in the valley, the torch symbolizing the insight, wisdom, and education the institution brings to the region. Eleven stars surround the torch representing the members of the Board of Trustees. The University seal is associated with honor, tradition and speaks to the University’s longevity.
Usage & Restrictions
Reserved for official and ceremonial uses by the institution, the use of the seal is limited, appearing on diplomas, transcripts, deeds, and decrees. The CMU Marketing and Communications Office may also authorize the use of the University seal on other materials related to the granting of degrees.
Do not combine the University seal with other marks or graphic elements. The art should not be rotated or altered in any manner.
Color Usages
The full-color of the mark features the seal imagery in a gold gradient on a white background surrounded by a mavroon ring. The lettering in the ring appears in the gold color to complete the design. The seal may also be reproduced only using one-color. Reproducing the seal using mavroon, black, white, or yellow. Printing in any other color combination is not allowed in the CMU master brand and should be avoided.

Vertical Signature with Brand Extension
Wordmark with Brand Extension
Purpose
Colorado Mesa University, as a master brand, is greater than the sum of its parts. By employing a single image, the University will capitalize on the power of a new identity that represents the institution as a whole. Brand extensions are granted to distinguish a limited number of organizations and CMU entities. They were created to give the unit a unique identity but reinforcing the master brand by utilizing the principal mark in the brand. This approach strengthens not only the individual unit but also the Colorado Mesa University master brand. The criteria and organizational entities to qualify a unit as brand extensions are as follows:
- A branch campus
- An organization that is closely affiliated with Colorado Mesa University but has its own organizational structure and distinct board of directors and or IRS designation. Examples include the Alumni Association, Foundation, and Real Estate Foundation
- A revenue-generating auxiliary function of the University that markets its services beyond the University community, such as the University Center, Maverick Center, and John U. Tomlinson Library, or an officially sanctioned research center or institute.
Usage & Restrictions
Brand extensions customized marks are created by locking the name of the brand extension to the master brand vertical signatures or wordmark. The configuration maintains that the Colorado Mesa University name has top billing by placing the unit's name below the master brand mark in the Trajan Bold font. The marks are for use on that unit's specific communication materials.
Sub-identities (including logos, wordmarks, typefaces, and other design elements other than those officially approved) detract from the University's ability to project a consistent, coordinated identity. Therefore, logos, wordmarks, and alternate identities that deviate from the approved identity standards detailed in this manual are prohibited.
Administrative units are not authorized to use customized brand extension mark. If a visual graphic of an administrative office, is needed, the Marketing Office must approve the mark before use. Some administrative units do have permission to use a custom brand for marketing themselves, like IRIS.
Brand extensions are required to adhere to all the visual guidelines set in the "University Signature and Wordmark" section of this website. Do not use the brand extension with the University's horizontal signature.

The brand extension mark can utilize one-color. Approved colors for one-color use are mavroon, white, black, and yellow.
One-color Brand Extension Examples
Brand extensions and one-color colors should be selected based on the background the mark is placed on to produce the best visual contrast for optimal viewing.
Vertical Signature with Academic Extension
Wordmark with Academic Extension
Purpose
The brand equity for academic departments and programs rests with their affiliation with Colorado Mesa University. Sub-visual identities for academic departments (including logos, wordmarks, typefaces, slogans, and other design elements) detract from the University’s ability to project a consistent, coordinated identity. Therefore, logos and wordmarks that deviate from the approved identity standards detailed in this manual are prohibited.
However, the branding system allows academic departments to use a subsystem comprised of the department name arranged below the University vertical signature or wordmark. Never use the CMU horizontal signature when creating an academic extension.
Usage & Restrictions
The configuration maintains that Colorado Mesa University is the master brand by placing the unit’s name below the master brand signature in a smaller Avenir Black font. The name of the academic department is in all caps.
Designed for use on academic units, specific communication materials, academic extension signatures are required to adhere to all other visual guidelines in the University signature and wordmark section of this website.
Do not incorporate taglines or slogans within the academic extension. Academic departments should not adopt a unit-specific tagline or slogan. Do not create academic extensions without permission from the Marketing and Communications Office.

Student Life Lock-up
Purpose
Student clubs and organizations are an essential part of the college experience. It is acceptable for all student clubs and organizations to create and use their logo, providing the logo:
- does not violate the CMU visual identity and brand standards
- does not contain obscene material as defined by community standards
- does not contain words or imagery related to alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia
Student clubs and organizations are encouraged to consult with their peers in the Campus Design Studio (CDS)—a student-run graphic design studio—for professional assistance in logo design. CDS is a full-service studio providing opportunities for graphic design students to apply creative skills and bring professional print and Web design services to student organizations. Please email [email protected] for more information on prices and services provided by CDS.
Student organizations are allowed to and strongly encouraged to identify their affiliation with the University through the proper use of the CMU "Student Lock-up." Use this lockup on all communications, products, publications, flyers, documents, websites (including social media), and apparel.
To obtain permission to use the logo lockup, student organizations must:
- Be a registered student club or organization with the Student Life office. To register, call the Director of Student Life at 970.248.1111 or visit coloradomesa.edu/student-life.
- Submit a vector art file of their logos to the Marketing and Communication Office. The Brand Manager will then review the logo.
- If approved, the student club/organization logo will be "locked" to the CMU wordmark and returned to the club/organization. Once approved, the logo stays approved as long as the club/organization remains a registered student club/organization, or until the club/organization makes a choice to rebrand.
- If a club/organization decides to change the club's or organization's logo, the new art should be submitted to the Marketing Office and not used until the mark is approved.
Any student clubs or organization that chooses not to use the student lockup on their logo, or use a mark that is not approved, are not authorized to:
- Use University signatures, trademarks, logos, or graphics (including the CMU, WCCC, Maverick Athletic signatures, wordmarks, acronyms, trademarks, or logos (including the Maverick Head)
- Use "CMU," "Colorado Mesa University," "Colorado Mesa," "WCCC," or "Western Colorado Community College" in any way in the club/organization's name, thereby indicating sponsorship or affiliation by the University.

Maverick Athletics

Purpose
CMU athletics is an integral component of the collegiate experience. Sport provides opportunities for students to practice leadership skills, improve focus and discipline, live a healthy lifestyle, and compete for the school. Having a sports program on the campus enhances brand awareness, image, and reputation. It also has the power to grow a community and improve school spirit. CMU athletes, known as the Mavericks, represent the school on and off the field and are highly visible. Members of sports teams are genuinely brand ambassadors. Therefore standards must be followed in all forms of sports communications from uniforms to scoreboard sings to game day programs.
The Colorado Mesa University athletics signature is the formal graphic of the CMU Athletic department. Any athletics units can make use of the signature mark, like sports teams, as well as other units on the field of competition during competitive events like Athletic Trainers or the marching band. Like all the marks in the Maverick Athletic sub-brand, the signature has a bolder, stronger, and younger look to match the dynamic nature of the sub-brand. Unlike the Colorado Mesa University master brand signature and the WCCC sub-brand signature, the Maverick Athletics signature consists of only a single component.
Usage & Restriction
This signature should be present on all Maverick Athletics communications. The Maverick Athletic signature should not be used in conjunction with or in place with marks from the CMU master brand signature nor the WCCC sub-brand.
The Maverick Athletic signatures is a trademark for the school, and the trademark symbol must appear to the right of the mark along the baseline of the graphic. Because the signature is trademarked material for CMU, permission to use the mark must be obtained through the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) portal or directly from the CMU Marketing and Communications Office.
Positioned the full signature in such a way that allows a distance equal to the height of the “Y” in “University” of clear space between the mark and the nearest graphic element or edge of the design area.

Full-color Maverick Athletics Interlocking CMU Mark with Mavroon Fill
Download Full-color Athletic Interlocking Mark with Mavroon Fill (.zip)
Purpose
The interlocking CMU mark overlaps all three letters from the CMU acronym. The C is the biggest of the three and is placed in the middle of the graphic. The M and the U are smaller than the C. The M is placed towards the upper-left-hand corner of the C. The U is toward the lower-right-hand corner of the C. The C is a sans-serif letter, and the M and U both have serifs.
The mark was initially created for the Mavericks baseball and softball teams, the design of the mark was set in the tradition of many interlocking baseball logos. Over time, the other athletic teams began adapting the interlocking logo. Eventually, the interlocking CMU mark became a staple for the entire athletic department. Now it is known as the premier mark in the Maverick Athletics sub-brand.
Usage & Restriction
Being the main graphic identifier for Maverick Athletics, this logo should be present on all communications for the department. Do not use the interlocking mark in conjunction with other marks from the CMU master brand or WCCC sub-brand.
The Maverick Athletic interlocking CMU mark is a trademark for the school. A trademark symbol must appear below and to the right of the intersection of the C and the U. Because the mark is trademark material for CMU, permission to use the mark must be obtained through the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) portal or directly from the CMU Marketing and Communications Office.
Color Usages
The Interlocking CMU mark has two official color combinations. The first has the mark filled with maroon and outline in yellow or gold (pictured above). Place this version on photos and almost all color backgrounds. The only exception is when this mark is on a maroon background. When that occurs, the color combination should change to have a white fill with a gold or yellow outline (pictured below). All other color combinations are not allowed and are to be avoided.
The interlocking CMU mark can be reproduced in one-color using mavroon, black, white and yellow.

Purpose
The mascot mark with Maverick serves as a rallying point and a bold unifying visual for the Maverick Athletic sub-brand. The use of the mark is limited to intercollegiate athletics, club sports, intramural leagues, and other campus units that are on the field of play during competition.
The mascot mark may be used in a limited number of other applications when such use is directly tied to/engaged with an athletic event. The Marketing Office must approve such use.
Examples include:
- alumni communication promoting athletic events/athletic affinity groups (i.e., softball alumnae reunion)
- CMU marching band uniforms;
- medallions or sports awards for student-athletes/alumni;
- approved, licensed apparel and accessories;
- events related to athletic programming;
- Maverick Club communication.
The mascot marks may not appear in conjunction with other marks in the CMU master brand, WCCC sub-brand, or outside corporate logos except as allowed by specific sponsorship/licensing agreements managed by the Marketing Office.
As with all University logos, signatures, graphics, the mascot logo may not be modified or redesigned in any way. Other University organizations/units may not incorporate the mascot into their logos/identities, and it should not be used to identify or represent an individual employed with the University in any capacity (i.e., in email signatures).
Mascot with Mavericks
This mark (shown above) is intended to be used the most out of all the mascot marks. This graphic is a registered trademark of Colorado Mesa University. Include a registered trademark symbol in the logo above the "S" in the word Mavericks. Because the mark is trademark material for CMU, permission to use the mark must be obtained through the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) portal or directly from the CMU Marketing and Communications Office.

Mascot mark alone
This mark is intended for use when the school's name, "Colorado Mesa University," or the word "Maverick" is also present in the design or layout. The mark should not stand alone and should be accompanied by the school name or Mavericks to gain brand recognition. Examples may include, but not limited to, team uniforms, scoreboards, website mastheads. Exceptions to this rule include helmets and baseball caps or other products where space is of a premium. For permission to use the mascot mark in applications, please contact the Marketing Office.
Maverick Athletics Mascot with Athletic Signature

Mascot with the athletics signature
This mark is intended primarily for use on apparel worn by athletic staff and coaches while recruiting and or conducting media relations. It best used if the school name needs to present in the communication.
Color Usages
The full-color version of the mark uses all four primary and secondary colors in the CMU brand (mavroon, black, yellow, and white). The most cost-effective way to use the full-color version of the marks is in full-color or CMYK printing. The mark can be used using two colors to save money. To use the signature in this way, replace all the yellow with white and use black and mavroon ink. The signatures can be reproduced in one-color using mavroon, black, white, and yellow.
These color combinations cannot be changed or altered. Never use different variations of colors when using any of the mascot marks.

Maverick Athletics Sport Extension Example
Purpose
Each sport can individually identify themselves by placing their sport name directly under the interlocking logo in the ITC Serif Gothic Heavy font in all caps. However, since there are varsity sports, club sports, and intramural sports that play for CMU, some guidelines are needed to specifying what teams are allowed to place under the interlocking CMU mark.
The three types of sports expressed above are viewed in tiers. Our varsity sports are considered the highest tier, followed by club sports, which leaves intramural sports as the lowest tier. If a sport exists in more than one tier, then the highest tier is reserved the privilege of having using the sports name underneath the interlocking logo; the lower tiers must specify their tier.
For example, Men's Basketball exists in the varsity, club, and intramural tiers. Therefore, only the varsity team is allowed to place "Basketball" under the interlocking mark. The club team must use "Club Basketball," and the intramural team must say "Intramural Basketball" underneath the interlocking CMU mark.
When a sports team does not exist as a varsity sport, then it is slightly different. For example, the CMU cycling team is considered a club sport, but since the sport cycling does not exist at the varsity tier, the cycling team is not required to specify their tier level. They are allowed to only use "Cycling" underneath the interlocking logo and do not have to use "Club Cycling."
When it comes to sports that have both a men's and a women's team, whether or not to specify gender is at the discretion of the teams themselves. For example, CMU has both a men's soccer team and a women's soccer team. Both teams are allowed to put "Soccer" underneath the interlocking CMU mark, or if they choose, they are also allowed to say "Men's Soccer" or "Women's Soccer" underneath the interlocking mark. The same rule applies to the intramural coed indoor soccer team. The coed intramural team is not required to specify that they are a coed sport. However, they do have to specify that they are an intramural sport because intramural soccer is not the highest tier of CMU's soccer teams.

Examples of Sport Extensions
Color Usages
Follow the color usages guidelines in the Interlocking CMU mark section of this website. A Sport Extension can be reproduced using the mavroon, black, white and yellow colors.
Athletic Uniform and Apparel Guidelines
The following guidelines should be followed when producing a varsity sports uniform, warm-up jerseys and any coaching staff apparel (all apparel that will be viewed by the public during CMU athletic competition). Violating these guidelines may result in having to remake the apparel item.
1. Colors
Color is an important component of the CMU identity. Two primary colors are available for varsity sport uniforms, maroon and white. Maroon and white have represented CMU since 1925 throughout all the different names of the institution. One primary color should fill the majority of the uniform surface area. Use solid colors and avoid patterns. Uniforms should include a secondary or accent color, including yellow (PMS 116)* or black. The accent/secondary color should be used only as an accent on the uniform.
Color | Approved Use |
Mesa Maroon (PMS 209, aka Mavroon) | Primary color |
White | Primary color |
Black (PMS Black) | Accent color** |
Yellow (PMS 116, aka Athletic Gold) | Accent color** |
* Use of yellow as an accent color is strongly encouraged as we established is in the CMU brand.
** Sports that may need a third or fourth uniform color (i.e. baseball, softball, soccer goalkeepers) may use Athletic Gold or black as another primary color.
2. University Identifiers
In addition to player numbers, one of the following identifiers must appear on all uniforms, "CMU," "Colorado Mesa," "Colorado Mesa University" or "Mavericks." Please note that "Mesa" alone does not fulfill the requirement as a University identifier.
For teams that traditionally have home and away uniforms, "Mavericks," or "CMU" is recommended for home apparel and "Colorado Mesa," "Colorado Mesa University" for away. Teams that use the same uniform for both home and away events can choose which identifier to put on the uniform. If teams have more than one uniform, there should be a “Maverick” or "CMU" set and a “Colorado Mesa” or “Colorado Mesa University” set.
Lettering should be set ITC Serif Gothic Heavy. If that font is unavailable for use then the use of CMU’s block letters graphics or the type in a block font is appropriate for use. The words must appear in the established configuration set in the Athletic sub-brand. The Marketing Office will supply files for vendor use, and vendors may also download files directly from the CLC (formerly Learfield) Trademarx website. Jersey numbers may appear in a block-style font from the vendor’s catalog.
3. Graphics
The main graphic for all varsity athletic uniforms is the interlocking CMU acronym. This graphic should have priority placement on the uniform.
The Maverick head graphic is also allowed on uniforms and should have a secondary placement.
For warm-up, practice and coaching apparel, a sport extension (i.e. Football, Golf, etc.) may be placed below the interlocking CMU acronym using the font ITC Serif Gothic Heavy. Graphics have been pre-designed for all sports. All approved graphic files, including the block versions of "Maverick," "CMU," "Colorado Mesa" and "Colorado Mesa University," the Maverick head and the interlocking CMU acronym can be found on the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) website and requested by email from the Marketing Office. To obtain a graphic, please contact Jeremy Smith, senior graphic artist and brand manager.
4. Approval Process
Vendors must submit all final uniform, practice and coaching apparel designs to the Marketing Office via the CLC website or via email to thesenior graphic artist and brand manager.
Contact Jeremy Smith, senior graphic artist and brand manager at 970.248.1371 or [email protected] to obtain university seal or any brand, academic, or sports extensions graphic files.
