Here are some tips for finding workplaces which are dedicated to diversity and inclusion:
Most companies will have a list of implemented diversity initiatives somewhere on their website. These initiatives usually involve encouraging more diverse hiring processes, but also supporting existing employees to provide their fresh perspectives.
One positive indicator of a diverse and inclusive workplace is looking to it's board of directors and finding several types of people. This is a good sign that the company appreciates diversity at every level.
If you are interested in a particular company, try to establish connections with people who already work there. With these kind of connections, you may be able to find out something about the workplace culture that you didn't know before and walk away with a connection you didn't have before. A good place to make these connections is through LinkedIn. Additionally, Career Services provides professional introduction services for students and prospective employers. If you are interested in a professional introduction, please contact Career Services.
If a company has been historically diverse, that is a good indication that the company values inclusion and diversity. A company with fewer reports of harassment claims, lawsuits, and other various discrimination claims shows that the company encourages a positive work environment for all perspectives.
When a company is inclusive, it is often shown by their commitment to respecting the values of all of their employees. Things like paid medical leave (paternity, maternity), observing dietary restrictions in their cafeterias, and allowing employees time off to observe holidays that are important for their culture are all great indicators of workplace diversity.
Finding a diverse workplace isn't just good for you, it is also excellent for the company. Inclusive workplaces value individual voices more and try to help employees feel less isolated. These practices lead to a more cohesive and productive workplace.
