What is Handshake?

Handshake is a top online resource that helps connect students to employers, and employers to students. Whether you are looking for an internship, a part-time job, or your first “real” job, Handshake can help. The more you do in Handshake, the smarter it gets. The more the system knows about you, the better able it is to deliver relevant up-to-date content directly to your feed. Log in early and often as new opportunities are constantly being added. Complete your free profile and start looking for all the great opportunities available for you.  

How to Apply for Jobs in Handshake

Make Your Handshake Profile Stand Out

  • You may set your profile as public to employers by selecting the "Make Profile Public" button.  This allows employers to search your profile and contact you about job and internship opportunities.
  • Fill out your Education Section with your major and start/end dates.  Click the pencil next to your name to edit this section.
  • Fill out your Work Experience and include your Job Title, Employer, Time Period, Location, and a summary of your job duties, responsibilities, and accomplishments.
  • Add your skills to your profile.  These can be transferable skills or field/major-specific skills.
  • Add Clubs, Organization, Associations, and Extracurricular Activities you are involved in.
  • Better yet, upload your resume and let Handshake fill in your Work Experience, Skills, and additional sections for you!  By uploading a resume, you will have the option to build your profile sections from it.
  • Add a profile picture!
  • Download the Handshake App on your mobile device for FREE! Use it to explore jobs, favorite them, and even apply.  Receive notifications about application deadlines and messages from employers.  For steps on how to log in via mobile, please read more here!

Avoid Fraudulent Postings and Scams

Earning Academic Credit for Internships

Students may earn academic credit by completing a paid or unpaid internship.  In order to earn academic credit for an internship, students must contact the internship coordinator within their discipline to coordinate the process and enroll in the internship.
