Applying for Veteran’s Education Benefits

 

 

1.  Apply to CMU:

         Go to www.coloradomesa.edu to complete and submit your application.

         If you are a veteran or active duty service member, put in the promo code VETERAN so you do not have to pay the application fee.

2.  Find the appropriate category below for further steps.

 

New Applicants:  If you have never received VA Educational Benefits…

         Go to https://www.vets.gov/education/apply/ and apply for benefits.

         If you opted to do the kicker, please make a note in the remarks section of the application.

 

Prior Recipients: If you used your benefits at a previous school…

         Complete the Change of Program or Place of Training at https://www.vets.gov/education/apply/.  Under "Ready to Apply?", select the "Updating my current education benefits" option. 

 

Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31):  If you have a service connected injury….

         Call the VA Vocational Rehab counselor (Ryan Morris) at (970) 245-2026Call: (970) 241-5422 or email at ryan.morris1@va.gov for additional benefits that may be available to you. 

 

Eligible Dependents (Chapter 35): This is for spouses and/or children of veterans who have died in the line of duty or have service connected disabilities. 

         Go to https://www.vets.gov/education/apply/ and complete the application online (form #22-5490)

 

Transfer of Eligibility (Chapter 33T): Post 9/11 Veterans who meet certain criteria can transfer a portion or his/her education benefits to spouses and/or children.

         Veteran needs to complete a transfer application at https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/public/faq/Education_Benefits-How_to_Transfer_Benefits.

         Dependent needs to complete the application online (once benefits are transferred) at https://www.vets.gov/education/apply/ (form #22-1990E)

 

3. Veteran’s Enrollment Certification Request:

         Find form at http://www.coloradomesa.edu/registrar/documents/VeteransEnrollmentCertificationRequest.pdf. Submit to the Certifying Official in the Veteran Services office after you have registered for classes.

 

4. Military Transcripts:

         Have your military transcripts sent to the Registrar’s Office.

5. Certificate of Eligibility (COE):

         VA will send you your COE showing the number of months you have eligible, the percent of your eligibility, and the date eligibility expires (may take 4-10 weeks)

         Bring your COE to the Certifying Official in the Veteran Services office.

 

5. DD-214:

         Get your DD-214 to Veteran Services.  This will be scanned into a secure file to be viewed only by the Certifying Official and Associate Registrar.
